Hi Paul, glad to see you have some hips from the pollen that I sent.

How many crosses did you attempt with Beauty of Leafland? I am curious as to how viable it is. I see you have 1 success (Great Wall x Beauty of Leafland). Since finding out that Beauty of Leafland is a triploid, I am curious about how fertile it is. I didnt have any success with it this year though that doesnt surprise me. I will have load of pollen to try next year though so I hope for better results. Now that I think about it, there were a number of open pollinated hips on it. I should go out and see if I can find them. I had forgotten about them.

J5 seems to work really well. I had good results with its pollen.

Let me know how the Great Wall x Beauty of Leafland fares. I wonder what kind of seedlings are going to come from BofL

-Steve

Hi Steven,

I tried three attempts with B of L on Great Wall with no hips forming. I also tried it twice on a seedling that I grew but don’t know the parentage of, with no hips also. I didn’t record that one because I shovel pruned it. I did try it on Folksinger twice and they both took with 30 seeds total. So 7 attempts, 2 hips and 30 seeds. I would have done more attempts, but if you remember I ruined the pollen when I hadn’t dried out the container before I put it in.

This is the first year I have Great Wall and I’m not all that impressed with it. It didn’t put out much growth, the flowers weren’t that great and it got BS pretty bad. So I’m not that disappointed they didn’t take. I’m going to give it another year to see how it does. I’m interested in seeing how the Folksinger x B of L cross pans out though. If you’re giving away more B of L pollen next spring I have some other plants I would love to try it on.

I had really good luck with J5 also. I made 21 attempts with 15 hips forming resulting in 343 seeds. I had the best results on the Rugosas Darts Dash and Showy Pavement with 52 and 85 seeds per hip average respectively. I only averaged 6 seeds per hip with Graham Thomas and Grimaldi though. The 3 attempts on Pink Perpetual didn’t take. That’s another one that’ll probably be shovel pruned next year also.

What kind of results did you get?

Thanks again,

Paul

Hi Paul,

Nice to see the Orden worked. Next year, if you want, you should also be able to try Annie of Tharau, Geschwinds Nordlandrose I and Lady Gay

This year I tried pollens of three different cultivars of Sericea on everything that bloomed, and every bloom, to no avail. I have a few seeds from the crosses onto Dragon’s Blood and Incantation, but fear them to be apomictic or selfs. It’s a natural consequence of being tightly focused, but next year I’m doubling my odds by adding moyesii to the pool.

Don

Hi Don,

That

Paul, the reason I used R. Fedtschenkoana as a pollen parent only is that Kim Rupert mentioned that it is a very poor seed parent. That being said it is a very fertile pollen parent. I already have about 50 seedlings from the Glauca X Fedtshcenkoana cross and close to 100 of the Joycie X Fedtschenkoana cross which germinated last month. R. Fedtschenkoana must have some potent genes because my first seedling which germinated has a grey cast to it and has that same smell of a Noble Fir with hardwood fire smoke as Kim Rupert puts it. All of these along with my Marbree seedlings I will have to keep for several years because they will not bloom the first year. I plan on using R.moyesii

Hi Patrick,

That

Patrick,

This was my first year using Orange Honey. I’ve been impressed with it because its been much more vigorous than any other miniature I’ve grown. It does fade badly here, however. I tried it with a wide variety of roses in both directions to see how fertile it was. It set hips from almost every pollen used, although it did not produce very many seeds per hip. Its pollen proved fertile too. No idea about germination yet or what traits it might pass to its offspring.

I was interested in your Jersey Beauty X Lady Hillingdon cross because I was also considering “rambler X Tea” crosses for next year using Veilchenblau. I don’t have Jersey Beauty or any of its relatives. I suppose I could use Lovely Fairy X Tea.

Mark

I finally got around to tallying my crosses and approximate seed count this morning. Here it is - 78 different crosses or open pollinations resulting in roughly 3800 seeds. I should probably track down some new seed trays and more potting mix and sand soon, and get my grow lights set up again. The first of the year is not all that far away.

My crosses (and, so far, collected open pollinated hips) can be viewed at:

When the hip is listed as “very small”, there probably will be zero seeds inside. (I am listing it to indicate that that cross did not take.)

I will probably add some open pollinated hips to the list as time becomes available.

Link: spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=pxHhTw7ylg79DvlL9xXLubw&hl=en

So far, I’ve processed 141 hips and gotten 1225 seeds. I still have quite a few hips in the fridge, but I’m sure I’m going to fall short of the 441 hips and 4114 seeds that I had last year. My crosses on R. gigantea resulted in empty green hips, but I did get some seeds from gigantea pollen. I didn’t get anything from R. clinophylla as seed parent or pollen parent. I lost many hips to gophers. I had over 30 hips of Danae X Mutabilis that aborted when Danae was attacked by gophers. I also lost hips on Stainless Steel to gophers. Processed so far:

86-3 is Dr. Basye’s amphidiploid of R. banksiae X R. laevigata.

It’ll be fun to learn if you get anything out of 86-3 Jim. Ray Ponton told me he had been unsuccessful with it. I’ve got Riverbanks x laevigata from last years attempts. It is not vigorous and non-remontant. I hope it flowers this Spring.

What was the source of your clinophylla? Thanks, Robert

Most of my crosses with 86-3 aborted, and the hips that did set didn’t contain many seeds. The five listed crosses produced 15 hips and 60 seeds. I’ll be delighted if I get one good seedling from the bunch.

86-3 blooms early, before most of my best seed parents, so I froze the pollen. Most of the hips I got were from frozen pollen.

My clinophylla came from Paul Barden. I only did a few crosses with it this year. I’ll try crossing it with different roses next year. BTW, I noticed a bloom on my clinophylla a few weeks ago. I hadn’t seen any Fall blooms on it before. Has anyone else seen rebloom on clinophylla?

Jim, Cass Bernstein reports clinophylla will blossom till frost in her climate. I was wondering if you had the same clone I distributed which is the one Cass grows. I was unsuccessful with it the one season I tried it too. I found Powdery Mildew on some interior branches and I decided to move away from it. Paul Barden’s clinophylla came from a different seed than mine though they came from the same source. He produced a nice a first generation clinophylla hybrid with no mildew so far.

It would be nice to see 86-3 listed at HMF with some pics. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that you are successful with it. Laevigata has turned out to be one of the hardest species I have worked with, but since I’ve seem Powdery Mildew infection on laevigata and I am much less enthralled with it than I used to be.

Nothing is perfect I guess.

I haven’t seen any mildew on my clinophylla. I haven’t grown laevigata, so I don’t know whether it would mildew here. I have the hybrid laevigata Ramona, and I don’t recall seeing mildew on it. I had R. banksiae lutescens in a one-gallon pot last Spring, and it got one of the worst cases of powdery mildew I’ve ever seen. Every leaf was completely white. I’m hoping that the mildew was due to the stress of being in a small pot and that it will be healthy now that its roots have plenty of room. 86-3 has had no fungal diseases in the several years that I’ve had it. I didn’t realize that it isn’t on HelpMeFind. I’ll check to see if I have any photos of it.

Clinophylla mildewed on the inner portion of the plant where the air flow was restricted. It wasn’t bad but I can’t say clinophylla is immune. I’ve never found mildew on bracteata here.

Thanks for the heads up on lutescens. I was really wrestling with myself as to whether to acquire that one and space here is precious. I do not need another source of mildew susceptibility.

I will be looking for really good sources of disease resistant diploid yellow. I am working on a diploid banksia line now too.

The clone of laeviagata I have been using so far has not shown any tendency toward mildew. It was produced from embryo extraction derived from seed of a unique laevigata Ralph Moore had preserved for many years.

It would be great if you could post 86-3 to HMF. Thanks, Robert

The clone of laeviagata I have been using so far has not shown any tendency toward mildew. It was produced from embryo extraction derived from seed of a unique laevigata Ralph Moore had preserved for many years.

Robert, who did the embryo extraction? Do you know how old the seed actually was?

Nah, my Rosa banksia lutescens gets mildew, too (minor case in late spring}. It is surprising since this is not amildew prone area at all. I think the new growth is just so tender is why, though. I think it is especially prone right before the new wood hardens as the mildew seems to disappear by summer.

If anyone breeds anything from banksia lutescens we can meld the breeding lines down the road. Mildew is not the end of the of the story. It can be defeated in one generation with planning and a bit of luck.

The embryo excision using laevigata was performed by A.C. Tunningley on fresh seed. He sowed many seed but got no germination and did the embryo excision as a back up. It was the only seedling generated from the effort. The photos I have posted to HMF are from this clone. It’s very vigorous, very prickly and roots very easily.
