Now that I have Spanish Sun, I can really see where Sunsprite gets it’s remaining characteristics – most notably the buds, foliage edges and foliage/stem color.
It will be interesting to watch the flower soon Timo.
So far no aphids and no buds on mine CG.
The new foliage is very light green; Chinatown surely got it from CG.
Bo
I looked some closer and their are a huge amouth of buds showing up. I will let one bloom grow for the picture Bo.
The others will be pollinated with [Coral Dawn x Golden Celebration], R. Hugonis, R. Xanthia, [Coral Dawn x Sangerhauser Jub-rose] and U10-OP-P01-J07.
I hope yours will give buds soon Bo, if I look to the pictures on HMF it will be a wonderfull signt to see all those yellows. In mid summer I hope it will bloom good as well to get a very nice picture.
Tim
Surely you must let us see a picture when it bloom Timo. I will do the same.
I hope mine will bloom at the same time as mainly Westerland, Chinatown, Abraham Darby, Aloha, Ghislaine de F
CG would be a good combo with mauves, but Ive read that Europe isnt a big fan of mauve. Is this true in certain areas and not others, or?
mauves is ok with, but the nearest colour I got to that, is with “Souvenir du Docteur Jamain”, se link.
I put it on the list
Bo
Ah yeah, that is more on the red side
Here is an example of the color range popular here. However, the purple tones are coming into vogue here now
CG would be good to bring in superior plant qualities to this problematic color class.
Jadea,
I’ll put some CG on Blue Moon and Charles de Gaulle. CdG is very desease resistant says HMF. Occuring to my brother Blue Moon isn’t. I’ll give it a try both ways. Looking forward to see what yellow and mauve brings.
Timo
Jadae,
Nice to hear you have Spanish Sun. That was one of the first three roses I ever grew, back in 1974. I ordered it from the Jackson and Perkins rose-scented catalog.
Awesome! I hope you enjoyed it.
Ive been watching it some. I can see the Goldilocks influence on the petals as they age (the way they crinkle and form in the bloom interior).
I am crossign my fingers regarding plant health.
Also, I think crossing it with Geoff Hamilton would be a bad idea. It needs something with superior petal substance. Sunspite has had this bred into it. However, I am trying to avoid the Golden Masterpiece part of Sunsprite altogether. GM is so dominating in its descendants growth habit! I hate it lol. Also, I have better sources of dark yellow, so Sunsprite is redundant in its yellow, especially with its gaunt habit and mildew-proneness. I am most interested in Spanish Sun’s scent, cluster architecture and plant architecture. It is the color, bloom form and petal substance that needs improved upon.
This is one reason why Im excited for you guys to have CG. I think it is superior to the similar Friedrich Worlein, and it’s relation to GM
Without going back to reread everything in the thread to confirm that it hasn’t been discussed at length already, have folks had experience using Chinatown and Lichtkoenigan Lucia – both F1’s of CG? I’m not familiar with either, but like their descriptions.
-Philip
I’ve had good luck with ‘Chinatown’ both for seed and pollen.
It seems to pass along strong fragrance.
I have a healthy looking Westerland x Chinatown seedling growing up now. Very light green leaves, as both Chinatown and CG. Still young though, and no flower buds yet.
Westerland is F2’s of CG, so the seedling should have received a lot of CG’s genes.
Bo
I used lichtkoningin Lucia on New Dawn but no sprouted seeds from that cross.
CG goes very well here. Their will be a lot of blooms!!! I counted 14 buds so far. Will let some blooms grow for the picture. It’s one of the first from all the roses which blooms and it’s looking healthy to. Some blackspot on old leafs. But on the new growth it’s looking very good.
Timo, a long period with heat and sun here in Denmark, have been good for my CG’s, and I have now also flower buds on both plants. All the new growth looks very healthy too.
Bo
Nice to here Bo! Hope Rene’s CG is doing well also.
The heat is doing a fine job, but a little rain will be nice to. lol. My lot is a dessert now.
Bo, Timo, you two are making us all jealous on this side of the pond…
Philip, according to Marily’s post up this message, CG could be ready for propagating in US this year. So maybe CG is not so far away anymore
Bo
How amazing the yellow is! In comparation with the HMF pictures this one look more yellow. Could be the camera.
;
It’s so full yellow, more yellow is impossible. WOW
Don’t know if it works but I pollinated it despite it was fully open. I wasn’t expecting it would open this morning so I was totally suprized.
It’s pollinated with my Coral Dawn x Golden Celebration seedling. The other one will be pollinated with Bersteinrose which I go looking for at my lot. Could be that thats one is open allready…hope not.
Regards!
Hi Timo
Yes it is surely a very beautiful rose
The HMF pictures are from autumn, so maybe that
