Second season growing Marbee OP seeds. I have kept 1 out of about 40 as it was the healthiest/most vigorous. However itās still got be one of the weakest roses I havenāt culled. Are they just on the small side or have I been very unlucky?

I canāt recall anyone who has raised Marbree seedlings not complaining about how weak they usually are.

Yeah, Iāve tried, really really really tried. Marbree itself has up and died multiple times (and subsequently rebought multiple times) and no seedlings to show for it. Was really trying to get something along Paulās Crested Damask, the combo of marbree x crested jewel seemed to produce a seedling that had more cresting that crested jewel, just wanted to test if that was repeatable/consistent with other crested like Helga Brauer (very healthy) and various seedlings I have from itā¦just doesnāt seem possible for me to get any result though.

Well as it has been the strongest I have got I will keep it to see if it produces spots and seedā¦ Then I try add a bit of vigour back to it

While maybe not exatly the same spot mechanism, Alain Blanchard appears to be much easier to get spots and mottled seedlings from.

Anyone have success using pollen from Indigo or Duchess of Portland on rugosa hybrids?
From reading the forum in the past about this topic this has been done a lot. Typically people say mildew seems to be major illness in the F1. People havenāt been that positive about it, however all you need is 1 healthy one to make it worth it
This study measured Indigo as a tetraploid in 2016.

It still shows as triploid on helpmefind for whatever reason. But yeah itās a fantastic mother so all though that would be possible, it did seem unlikely

Thanks James_D. I hadnāt seen that this was done much. I should have looked a little more I guess.
I suspect mildewing could be overcome by f2, assuming you had an F1 with at least some fertility.
I have found that mildew is a problem with most of my mother plants!

So last year I had 32 seeds in total from indigoā¦ Which was my best tally from my niche crosses. This year, 1 hip gave 27 seeds. It was one of the smaller ones of 14. Very early days but Iām very excited!

So in two years I have kept one of about 50 Marbree seedlings. The one I have kept has pushed out a flower in its first year. Itās not yet open but shall keep you posted! Additionally I now have around 200 seeds for Indigoā¦ So yeah if I get typical germination rates from it I will be swimming in seedlings this season.

Sadly I have gone on holiday when it appears it will openā¦ Classic. Peeled off a petal and it does appear to have some spotting.
