Ploidy of Prairie Dawn

Sorry Johannes, but which one has the tea scent?

One of my goals is to get that fragrance into a rugosa, I had hoped to get it from the ‘Schneezwerg’ X ‘Reve D’or’ seedling I mentioned in another post, but if it’s in something fairly hardy already I’ll have to get it.

Julie, I remember writing a reply but I’m not seeing it show up here.

Those crosses of yours sound amazing. I would certainly be grateful for some pollen this summer. Last year I didn’t have any/many takes with mailed pollen, but you are close enough I think so it’ll get here in short order. Any or all of those roses that you mentioned: Fed. itself, Virg. x Fed, and the CBJD x Fed.

I’m really glad to hear that the PJ x MS is hanging in there. Like seeing my hypothetical kid make two consecutive free throws even though she’s not an A-stringer. I agree that more work could improve that cross…maybe more work spraying it with fungicides.

It’s also very nice to hear about your affection for R. virginiana. Mine were just planted last spring, but I really like the glossy green foliage. Also, they were able to bloom even though planted as quite small seedlings (I think 2 of 5 bloomed) and they developed into nice looking shrubs. Only a hint or two of the monster within.

Kim, sorry I forgot to reply earlier. I think it would be a good idea to trial DLFED3 up here and I’d love to. Still dropping below freezing at night, though, so a little early to mail cuttings. I can’t wait!

Joe

Joe,

Since our bloom cycles are timed pretty close together, I should be able to get pollen to you at a time when you can apply it immediately and not have to freeze it. The only pollen I won’t have right now is R. fed itself. I had to remove the original monster last fall before it consumed two other beds. I have another start in a different garden but it is struggling right now. I expect it to take off in the next year or so as most of the species planted in this particular strip seemed to require a couple seasons to adjust before they took off. So, I am taking a well-deserved rest from sucker-pulling. I should be able to get pollen from the others unless they experience some sort of transplant shock and fail to bloom. They are all going into their 4th summer and all had blooms last year. As I recall, all were either white or a light pink. Could you send reminder in early June so I can be paying attention to them?

Just sent a well established 4" rosepot of DLFED 3 home with my sister to central Wisconsin-so I do hope it is hardy enough for USDA zone 4. This will be a trial of sorts for several Basyes legacy offspring. She was worried about the June beetles more than anything else.

Just made some pollen measurements on ‘Prairie Dawn’ and while I haven’t woked out the average, or the standard deviation yet, I think it’s safe to say it’s triploid. Pollen diameter ranged from 22-40 microns. There wasn’t much in the way of junk, with pretty much all of its pollen being well stained, so I’d expect good fertility from it as a male.

There was also a larger proportion of diploid pollen being produced with 79% of 62 grains measured being diploid.

Hope that’s of use Johannes.
