After holding in tight bud for a week, the first petal starts to peel back. Morden Fireglow x Abraham Darby.
Surprisingly pale bud (avec damage) from Benjamin Britten x Nymphenburg.
Oh HUZZAH!! The first bud (and juvenile flower!!) on my cross of François Juranville x (Mutabilis x Trier=“Pinwheel Surprise”) has appeared on one of nine seedlings.
FAT whiteish-green bud from Morden Fireglow x Elina.

Morden Fireglow x Elina has opened! It’s a pretty pearl-white double, and seems to have a sweet scent as well. Nice. Might have to repeat this cross.
Morden Fireglow x Abraham Darby. Deep scarlet colour holds wonderfully, I can hope it adds more petals, and so far it’s spotless! I’ve already repeated this one.
Night Owl x Danäe looks like a single pink, but the colour has luminous lavender-blue tones in it. And it’s sweetly fragrant. I’ll keep it a while, I think.

@VanIsleDWSmith how do you cycle your ungerminated achenes? I’m planning on trying it at the 90 day marker myself. Also what trays do you plant your seedlings in?

These are my seedling boxes, unglamorous but functional. Approx 8” deep and 16” square. Each one gets 9 rows (scroll up^ to see the grid I use) and the seeds from crosses (having been refrigerated since late fall), are ALL planted outside shortly after mid-winter, which gives them further chilling time. The temperatures will rise and fall naturally (sometimes it even snows!), and they start germinating when they’re ready. Occasionally a late frost will take out some of them, but not all. There is no opportunity to rechill with my system, but I do find that around midsummer a small, second-round of germinations will appear. After I’ve plucked out all the culls over the weeks, only my few selections remain in the boxes and I dig them out and pot them up. Sometimes I’ll find an INCREDIBLY VIGOROUS root-system has stretched itself to the corners of the boxes, and I like that. Other times, a small cluster of roots convinces me to cull an otherwise nice seedling. “Without roots, ya got nuthin’!”

Germinations from my crosses? Only about 58/1200
Blooms seem from those? Maybe a dozen?
Of those blooms were yanked? Half?
It’s been another strange spring of extremes here and though it’s now midsummer, I’m still waiting on most of the seedlings to show me a bloom. Many initial tiny buds dropped in the first heatwave, and we have had a handful of them since. This is the new normal now, and it’s extremely hard to manage.

Oh. Oh my! This is (Outta the Blue x Nymphenburg), and I’m LOVING the balance of colours on the petal-back!! “Please be fragrant, please be fragrant, please be fragrant!!” Despite the weather, this seedling has retained most leaves undamaged.
This almost makes up for the deer wandering in last night AGAIN for a munch; “I had plans for those flowers” and all. Had myself a nice little tantrum about it this morning, and I’ve been hiding from the heat since 9:30am. It’s currently 32.9/91 IN THE SHADE.

Sorta what I was thinking too; test-cross w baby-pollen! lol I have no idea which parent in my stable…
Wait. Prairie Princess? Isn’t there some sort of stippling/markings back there? I might have to search this forum for most-likely lines to explore, though I truly could not have predicting this outcome from these parents to begin with.

Just a few more seedlings about to bloom from last years’ crosses:
Nice fat bud from (Night Owl x Lambert Closse), hoping for good colour (meaning anything but middling-pink), fragrance, and hardiness.
An OP of Westerland that grew twenty leaves before setting a flower. Methinks it wants to climb. It’s also dreadfully spiky along the stems and leaf-rachis.
Think this is seedling number two of this cross to bloom?
Also the second seedling from the cross, hopefully something nice, though very likely triploid.

(Night Owl x Lambert Closse) if it has to be pink, I’m glad it veers toward magenta. Reasonably healthy to date, I’m hoping for fragrance. Another sibling twice this one’s size has yet to form a bud, but has amazingly-clean, large and glossy leaves. It will likely be kept too, even if it doesn’t show a flower this season.
But I hope it does.
Prettily imbricated petal formation. Light, spicy scent.

Interesting even as it ages: denser spots and veining appear as the bright colour fades. I’d like to see what it does in year two, so I’ll tag it a keeper for more observation. If it remains healthy, perhaps it could be used to bring hardy purples out of its genetics.

Finally seeing a couple buds from my cross of (Roller Coaster x Karl Herbst). I imagine minis and mini-flora types. Fragrance, vigour, & stripes, all pluses! Health is a toss-up, could go either way.
First bud spotted on one of two healthy seedlings of (Lambert Closse x Bull’s Eye[PEJamore]). Both are wickedly prickled, so I’m already unhappy, but I’d like to see an eyespot on a hardy plant.
This very tiny OP of ‘Mutabilis’ amuses me.
Good colour and a fat bud on this OP of ‘Westerland’! And then when it opened: cannot fault the colour, but semidouble? Harrumph. It’s also a prickly mofo, and will likely climb, so I’m not thrilled to keep it. Its fluffy, russet-toned sibling was nicer. But not as vigorous. But also not as prickly. Hmmm?
