Twenty-one of my own crosses have germinated! I have learned that ‘Nymphenburg’ is pollen-fertile, and I even got a cpl OP seeds to germinate for the first time! My own (Mutabilis x Trier) seedling “PinSup” is pollen fertile too, and putting it onto Barbier’s ‘François Juranville’ (a VERY WILLING seed-parent) should give larger flowers, in larger clusters, in warm yellow-apricot shades, on healthy & vigorous shrubs/climbers. Hopefully, the excellent and fast repeat of “PinSup” proves dominant.

Karl Herbst was used in two “floribunda-type” experimental crosses, (x ‘Ralph’s Creeper’) for vigour and bright colour, and (‘Roller Coaster’ x) for stripes and vigour, with hopefully improved health over the Roller Coaster parent, which is very susceptible to blackspot here. It’s possible that semi-climbers might result from both crosses. We shall see.

Fragrance in roses is very important to me, so many of my hybrids are made hoping to combine and expand on the scents of my parents. Disease-resistance is also vital, and though I live in a very forgiving climate, I’ve tried to match otherwise outstanding varieties with poorer resistance to stronger parents.

Though I am disappointed at the germination from ‘Laura Ford’ this year, I do have great hopes for the LF x Graham Thomas cross, even if only one seed has germinated so far! I think it could yield something wondrous.

Look forward to the updates mate!

I like that grid system, really clever.

Shockingly early bud from Tiffany x Elina! Hoping for scent from the one and health from the other, obviously. Pernetiana-type colouration would be awful nice too. I’m underwhelmed by Tiffany’s performance as a seed-setter, but Elina has given me some seedlings as pollen-parent on a few other shrubs, so at least THAT has worked.

Had decent germination from Karl Herbst w Elina pollen, but only one seedling remains.

That’s the total number of seeds sown *just from Permberton’s ‘Danäe’ alone. Guess how many seedlings I have? Go on…guess!

ONE. Just one single seedling from my cross of Danäe x François Juranville, with a non-repeat allele in play. Le sigh.

I had much higher hopes for her fertility, based on reading past posts.

Can you cycle any of the seeds in the fridge for an extra 2 weeks? That was advise I was given on here and has worked wonders for triggering more germinations. But that is absolutely wild… many of my crosses from last season was over a 100 seeds for about 10 seedlings… It truly is a numbers game

I am afraid I’ve planted out ALL THE SEED of my crosses; the only seeds left to cycle are OPs, and I have gotten a few extra seedlings from them, like ‘Nicole’, ‘Westerland’, and ‘Graham Thomas’.

Sadly, even though I’ve had OP seed of ‘Nymphenburg’ to germinate, none have survived. At least it’s pollen is fertile and I have a few seedlings “fathered” by it. I hope it passes along scent and vigour.

A few buds have appeared among my own crosses, and a couple from OP ‘Work of Art’.

My current favourites

Congratulations, they all look very promising! I’m already excited to see how they’ll continue to thrive and how they’ll bloom next year. I’m sure there will be some wonderful fragrances among them as well.

Rather foliacious-sepals are peeling back from one seedling of my cross between ‘Morden Fireglow’ x ‘Abraham Darby’, and showing a bright reddish shade! Pretty exciting stuff.

Wonder if that will be consistent, could be a nice niche feature!

Forgot this beauty, my surviving Aicha seedling.

Now back to my crosses. I have buds!!

‘Night Owl’ x ‘Danäe’, will likely be triploid, but I’m hoping for something interesting! Especially wanting FRAGRANCE. It may be a cross worth repeating.

More foliacious-sepals, this time on ‘Abraham Darby’ x ‘Nymphenburg’. This is a FRAGRANCE CROSS (both parents are among my favourite scented roses), and I am hoping that ‘Nymphenburg’ supplies better BS resistance.

‘Morden Fireglow’ x ‘Elina’. Looking for better health, vigorous plants and fuller, shapely flowers. Hoping for warm colours.

HUZZAH!! Another precocious-flowering seedling from OP seed of the rambler ‘François Juranville’, eagerly awaited. I have two dwarf-repeaters from the 2024 season that I kept, and none of last-year’s seedlings met the bar set by those two, so we will see what this year’s crop offers up.

I am jealous of the juvenile rebloom! Very exciting

Four days later, and it’s hardly moved, but the colour is still bright! ‘Morden Fireglow’ x ‘Abraham Darby’
