Hi George
I think you would be pushing the proverbial up hill if you were to try and use Euphrates as a seed parent. I have tried it for many years to no avail. As a dad I have had a little more luck, that is four seedlings, that I am convinced are hybrids. Only one has flowered so far and has no blotch but growth habit, leaves, thorns and reluctance to bloom suggest all four are hybrids. I look forward to next spring when they are most likely to bloom.
All the best
Mike
Oh how exciting Mike. What seed parent(s) proved successful for you?
lol…movin’ on… hey Jadae, do you think ‘Flower Carpet Pink’ could also be worth a try?
I would pass on it. The plant would be a great fit, but the color and the triploidy make it a difficult fit in an already iffy situation. However, if you already have ample pollen and already own FCP, then go for it. FC Amber sets hips more easily tho.
I have neither of those flower carpets. I appreciate your excellent advice, Jadae.
George,
I really do think that Jude the Obscure, Windrush or Wild Flower could be interesting matches. They are all really nice descendants of Golden Wings.
Yea. They are great ideas Jadae. Actually, you convinced me to try JTO last week, and so I went out a few days ago and purchased a two year old JTO for this cross. Hopefully it will be ready for service by September when it will spring bloom.
lol…if it takes, I’ll have to give it some name after you, Jadae…maybe “sky high” lol.
…in reference to the fact you are some very tall dude, I believe you once said…
Anyway, I also ordered Golden Wings, but after what Mike just wrote, I might just reverse that order (lucky the grower didn’t have it that day to sell to me)… It really doesn’t sound that Euphrates is much of a seed parent to consider throwing GW onto?!
I just did a search on Euphrates, and discovered a posting by you Mike, discussing that you used Euphoria (intereup) as a mom successfully with Euphrates pollen. Is this the cross you are talking about here on this thread?
lol…too bad we cannot get Euphoria (intereup) here (as well as sooooo many other selections…LOL).
I have posted a question on HMF Q&A asking whether anyone is aware of Euphoria being sold anywhere in Oz.
‘Euphrates’ on ‘Flower Carpet Amber’ is one I have planned for next season. FCA sets seed really easily. Also putting it onto ‘Comtesse de Labarthe’, ‘Monsier Tillier’, ‘Adam’, ‘Lorraine Lee’, ‘Nancy Hayward’ (if I can get the cuttings struck), and ‘Marie Van Houtte’ because they set seed easily with very wide range of pollens and is diploid and onto ‘Wild Rover’ which also sets seed easily with most things. The approach needed with ‘Euphrates’ is just throw it as many fertile roses as possible and see what happens. I harvested my ‘Altissimo’ x ‘Euphrates’ seeds the other day… only three massive seeds in the hip. Stratifying in peat at the moment. Putting it onto ‘Temple Bells’ might be interesting too.
lol… Euphoria looks to me to be (Flower Carpet something or other) x Euphrates lol.
Simon, all the best for your three seeds.
I don’t know a thing about how the Euphrates blotch is transmitted…but I see that Euphoria (apparently a descendant of Euphrates??) lacks a blotch, and Euphoria also has one listed descendant on HMF which itself also lacks a hulthemia blotch.
Nice colors in any case!

Simon has got me thinking about this idea from Jim’s recent hulthemia blotch thread…maybe if Euphrates is crossed with another diploid there will be less chance of genetic suppression (coming from modern rose genes??) blocking the blotch, than if it were to be crossed directly with a tetraploid modern?
The main issue with diploids is that you run into several problems – limited color choice, repeat bloom issues in many cultivars, large white eye zones, poor color retention and genetic incompatibility. I can see why Trier worked well, but there are very few diploids like Trier. Trier is interesting, too, as it can create salmons, yellows and mauves. That is saying a lot for a diploid alone.
Yep. I was thinking of Trier as a potential diploid seed parent for Euphrates (hence my remarks posted on Jim’s hulthemia blotch thread today). The point I was making there was, if Trier pollen allowed the hulthemia blotch to transmit, it should be an obvious candidate to mix with Euphrates hoping for the same result…and for that matter maybe even for Nigel Hawthorne…why not?!
I dont have Trier!
Is Trier an ok see parent? It seems to have been seed parent for a few of its F1 derivatives on a quick search I just did on HMF.
I am going to use JTO anyway, I still think it is a great strategy of yours Jadae. But if I can get Trier I’ll go for that as well…and to do that, I’ll just have to pull out some roses to make room (very low on space).
I think Trier could possibly work. Who knows. My overall point was that there would be a lot of road blocks when going strictly diploid. Personally, if you did get something okay from Trier x Euphrates, I would then self it on purpose lol – then outcross to another diploid. I would just only hope that mildew would not become an issue.
