Hulthemia Hardii....questionable fertility

Oh really?

Jadae, thanks for sharing your thought process in this possible cross you are contemplating…it is actually most interesting to follow…

Speaking of rugosa, I am in love with 'Roseraie de l’Ha

One of the things notable about Nigel Hawthorn is that its parent is Harvest Home, which is a seedling (possibly selfling) of Scabrosa. Scabrosa’s lineage is not entirely known, but it is different from many hybrid rugosas because the eye zone is uniform with the rest of the petals. One thing that I have noted is that many species have a lighter eye zone. I assume because it forms a target zone for visitors.

So backcrossing NH back to Scabrosa is ok too?!

I wouldnt see why not. There’s no saing that NH is fertile in any way possible, or that NH progeny would express the eye zone. But if so, then I dont see why Scabrosa wouldnt work just as well as the other ideas.

lol…too bad we dont have NH down under to try it out with ANYTHING!

Maybe its infertile as pollen and I can save you the effort lol. Remind me by August.

You’ve nothing to lose. Something tells me if you try hard enough you will ge there. I really hope you do…it would be so much fun to watch from here.

:0)

I found a pic of Harvest Home:

Do you think crossing NH with a single rugosa (rather than say a semi-double) might have a more dramatic blotch effect if you are lucky enough to get a hybrid?

I’ll take what I can get, to be honest, but a single would be nice too. I think single or semi-double would be equally good.

fair enough

I am trying to figure out what would be a good mom to throw Euphrates pollen onto…there are sooo many ideas flaoting in my head about this… some direction would be appreciated from all ya rose experts.

Fairy Changeling, parent of Euphrates, is pretty double like all of its siblings of the same lineage. I would probably aim for using Euphrates with singles and, at most, semi-doubles. Anything more is probablya sking for trouble. I would also probably aim for using it with diploids that are not pure white or dark red, have a low liklihood of having descendants with light eye zones and descend from a rambling species.

Hertfordshire, Plaisanterie, Amber Cloud… If you can get it onto another diploid, then maybe there would be enough of a bridge to bring it all into triploids then tatraploids.

You might try crossing Euphrates with Moore’s hulthemias if you can get them, which Jim Sproul has already mentioned on another thread.

I would try R. xanthina, R. hugonis, R. ecae, R. foetida, R. spinosissima, R. sericea or any of their close hybrids like the early Pernetianas, Cantabrigiensis, Canary Bird, pteragonis, Gloden Cheronese, Golden Wings or Ormiston Roy.

Because of the background of Fairy Changling, you might also try the older wichuraiana climbers by Horvath, Van Fleet, Walsh, Dawson, Barbier, Turbat and even some of the Brownells.

For the same reason you might also try any of the close hybrids of The Fairy and Immensee.

The idea is to stay close to the ancestors of Euphrates to increase the potential for chromosomal homology which, in turn, improves the potential for hybridization.

Jadae and Don, thanks for this information.

Don, Euphrates seems to be the ONLY hulthemia selection available here in Oz. We have no other easy choice in this matter

:0(

Jadae, I cannot get any one of these in Oz as far as I can make out: Hertfordshire, Plaisanterie, Amber Cloud… any other suggestions?

Don, I am scared to try ‘Golden Chersonese’, as it has not proven an easy seed parent as far as I can tell. I like your idea of using ‘Golden Wings’ conceptually, and even better I can obtain it here in Oz, however I cannot find an example where it has proved itself as a mom…any feedback?

I gave up looking at AUS sites. I saw some had Berkshire and Palmawhatever Frankenwhatever, but they could also be triploid. Another route is what Moore did, which is cross them with a single that imparts general health and hope for triploids that may be fertile. He used Playboy, but that probably doesnt help as much as it did with Tigris since Tigris is mainly yellow. Too bad you all dont have Playgold or Tequila down there. I am unsure if something like Trier would work and Danae would just give you mildew issues, although it would probably work. Bishop Darlington and Ghislaine de F

Yes we have very limited selections, as you can see. But I’ll look into these other ones you just mentioned. Thanks Jadae.
