Germinations from 2015 crosses

Only one today but with interesting parents:

Apricot Drift x Prairie Magic (RSM J5)

PM is RSM 84 x Hazeldean. It’s a once blooming hybrid Spinosissima that is hardy to zone 3b. PM is orange/apricot and AD is apricot colored so I’m hoping for a small shrub that is a hardy apricot with great disease resistance and repeat bloom. This cross is a great mixture of Spinosissima, foetida, arkansana and wichurana genes.

Germination is starting to pick up speed. Today:

Thrive! X Midnight Blue. Looking for a dark red or purple with good health

Royal Edward x Bull’s Eye. Looking for my first hulthemia hybrid with a blotch.

Apricot Drift x Whimsy. It will be pink. Looking for full petal count a great disease resistance.

Interesting crosses. Good luck with your seedlings! My germinations have slowed down the last couple of days, maybe because the daily high temps have been in the 70s for the past week. On the other hand, seedlings are growing fast in the warm sunny weather. 67 have had their first buds so far. Powdery mildew is starting to show up in the greenhouse, unfortunate, but not unexpected.

Thanks Jim. My germinations are just getting started. Wish I had a greenhouse!

Today:

Apricot Drift x WGAL

WGAL is Westerland x (Golden Angel x L83)

Today:

Petit Pink x EGS-1

EGS-1 is Easy Going x Suzanne

Hi Rob!! Wow your PP x EGS-1 cross sounds great!!! I’m imagining something super hardy with a blend of yellow and pink. Over the years I should have been using PP more strategically in breeding besides just raising op hips from it. Most op seedlings seem to be selfs and there hasn’t been any standouts. This past year was the first year I collected pollen and used it on other roses from the encouragement of others using it. PP is triploid and sometimes doesn’t produce much pollen, so that has been deterring me. However, I have a number of seedlings growing now and am excited to see what they grow into. There is one from a cross of a complex R. palustris hybrid x PP that has a flower bud forming!!

Hi David. This past season was my first time using your PP and I’m excited about what might turn up from this cross. I was looking for exactly what you imagined. I have a few other crosses using PP as seed parent that I hope germinate as well. Your R. palustris hybrid x PP spunds interesting. I hope you will be able to share some pics/descriptions of your PP seedlings.

Last season my PP plant through out a single 3 foot cane towards the end of the seasin. Is that unusual for that variety? I wondered if I have a climbing sport developing. I absolutely love your PP!!

Rob

Today:

Whimsy x Prairie Peace

I’m hopeful with this cross. Whimsy is the miniature Teeny Bopper x Double Knock Out and Prairie Peace (zone 2b) is Beauty of Leafland x Hazeldean. Just from the pollen parent alone, this seedling is 25% R. Spinosissima, 6% R. Laxa and 12.5% Persian Yellow. Really hardy genes there. Hopefully, along with really good hardiness, health, repeat bloom and smaller stature bush habit have all been inherited. It would be wonderful if when it blooms it is in the yellow, peach, apricot or even salmon color range.

Whimsy is turning out to be a really good seed parent.

Thanks for the comment on Whimsy, Rob. I had one once I think but I don’t know what happened to it. Might have to get another one. Do you have Miracle on the Hudson? That’s on my wish list for this spring.

Hi Joe. I have Miracle on the Hudson for spring delivery. We think alike.

Joe,

FYI, In addition to Whimsy turning out to be a good seed parent (in terms of germination rate and timing) I’m seeing that Apricot Drift is also a good seed parent. This one surprised me given the parentage. I assume it is a triploid.

Hi Rob,
I’m amazed at the wide variety and how many different crosses you’ve done. Most of them are quite interesting.

I’ve had Petit Pink for 3 or 4 years and it’s grown a longer lone cane for me several times as well. I have a OP seedling of it that is a little hardier and is a more rounded shape that doesn’t seem to grow the long canes. Good job getting EGS1 to take on it. I tried Kim’s (1-72-1 x hugonis) and my (Marie Pavie x R.blanda) on it but neither took.

Good luck with the Whimsy x Prairie Peace seedlings. I had a Prairie Peace OP seedling that I used as the pollen parent on Goldbusch and High Voltage two years ago. I have a number of second year seedlings from both those crosses but they seem to be susceptible to powdery mildew. I kept them anyway to see if they grow out of it. Hopefully your seedlings perform better.

Paul,

Thank you for the compliment. Sounds like my long Petit Pink cane isn’t a sport as I had hoped. I’m excited to see my Petit Pink x EGS1 seedling bloom. Hopefully it will bloom first season but there is some doubt. Too bad the two crosses you tried didn’t take. Those are interesting crosses.

I’m also hoping I will have first year blooms on my Whimsy x Prairie Peace. What does the bloom on your Prairie Peace Op seedling look like,

I have several small new Whimsy x Corylus seedlings in bud. Looking at the canes I can see the influence of Corylus in the thorniness. I’ll post pictures after blooms open. I’m hoping that these will be small shrubs that are hardy, repeat and are disease resistant.

Here are a couple pictures from 2014. It was a once bloomer and was quite hardy. It didn’t have as nice of flowers as PP did as they were single yellow but they did get a slight peach tint to them.

I’d like to see any pictures of the Whimsy x Corylus seedlings. I have some Metis seedlings from last year and a number of the repeat bloomed. I did reciprocal crosses with it and the ones with Metis as the seed parent aren’t as healthy as the ones with it as the pollen parent.

Paul,

Your Prairie Peace OP seedling looks great. Nice color there. I will post pictures of my Whimsy x Corylus seedlings. I should have open blooms in a week or so. The leaves don’t look like a hybrid but the canes appear to be thornier than expected. Your Metis seedling looks great. Can you tell what the seed parent was?

Yes, I really like the color and shape of PPOP but it was one I had to leave behind when I moved. I have a few of seedlings of it and I kept some pollen from it so all is not lost.

The seed parent is (Showy Pavement x R.blanda) x (Marie Pavie x R.blanda). This plant is the only one of the siblings that repeat bloomed but it isn’t quite as healthy as the others were. It’s the only one I kept. It’s completely hardy and it has a short stature but it’s leaves are fairly large and course looking. I mostly crossed it with plants with smaller leaves. Another cross I did with it was with Schneezwerg but none of those seedlings have bloomed yet.

That’s a great cross Paul and a nice looking plant.

Morning Magic x Strawberry Cream (miniature, Byrnes)

Hoping for a smaller bush, at least semi-double striped blooms, hardy and disease resistant.

Today:

Never Alone x Strawberry Cream (miniature, Byrnes)

Never Alone is hardy to zone 2 or 3. I’m not sure which. I’m hoping for a VERY hardy striped miniature or smaller shrub with great disease resistance.
