Thank you Jim.
Some seedlings are genetically defective and will die no matter what you do.
Magenta is a peculiar rose that I like a lot for its color, fragrance, and floriferousness. It is a very fertile seed parent but not practical as a pollen parent because it produces so few anthers.
Thanks Jim!
Several more crosses have started to germinate:
(((Magenta x Lilac Charm) x Cafe Ole) x Midnight Blue) x Rhapsody in Blue
(Lilac Charm x Schoener’s Nutkana) x (Fabulous! x (Schoener’s Nutkana x Coral Dawn))
(Moondance x Fabulous!) x (Fabulous! x (Schoener’s Nutkana x Coral Dawn))
Lasting Love x (Schoener’s Nutkana x Coral Dawn)
Midnight Blue x Rose Gilardi
Perhaps I’ll get purple stripes from that last cross.
It looks like it’s going to be a good year for seedlings. I already have over 100 even though most of my seeds are still in the fridge.
Jim,
I particularly like your (((Magenta x Lilac Charm) x Cafe Ole) x Midnight Blue) x Rhapsody in Blue cross.
Thank you! The seed parent is one of my favorite seedlings. It is a healthy purple floribunda with excellent form that won Best Seedling in the Monterey Bay Rose Society’s 2010 rose show.
Do you have it listed on HMF Jim?
ooow yes do you have pictures of the 2010 seedling?
Thanks jturner for the tip on Magnenta.
I have all of my seedlings planted now and under lights just in case more start germinating! I am really looking forward to seeing theses little guys come up!
No, my only seedlings on HMF are the ones that I’ve registered. I’m thinking of putting some of my unregistered seedlings on HMF this Spring after I take some photos.
Look forward to seeing pictures of them
I have pics of it on some memory card somewhere, but not where I thought. I haven’t photographed any of my seedlings for several years. I’m planning to photograph all of my best seedlings this Spring.
I’m definitely looking forward to seeing pics as well.
Germination today:
Apricot Drift x Corylus
Thos could be an interesting cross to move forward with.
That could have superlative disease resistance. Congratulations!
Jim, i’m hoping so. Thank you! I’m also hoping for at least semi double bloom, narrow/shiny leaves and some fertility. I’m sure it will be pink. With the non stop bloom from AD and with the rugosa blood, would it be too much to ask for repeat bloom this generation? ![]()
Yesterday:
Pretty Lady x Prairie Peace
Looking for repeat bloom, yellow/peach color, double bloom with decent form, disease resistance and hardiness to at least zone 4. Hopefully smaller stature than PP.
Interesting cross. How is Prairie Peace’s health for you?
I’ve gotten over 200 seedlings so far this year. I’m expecting 350-400, a lot fewer than my peak hybridizing years, but not bad for rebooting my program. 24 have had their first buds. I’ve been wondering why so many crosses started germinating so early this year. I just noticed that the thermostat in the fridge was set to a higher temperature than in the past. I guess that must be the reason.
Jim,
I don’t have prairie peace. I was given pollen to use last season.
Today:
Whimsy x Raspberry Rugostar. (miniature rogosa possibly?)
Midnight Blue x Strawberry Cream (Byrnes miniature)
Brite Eyes x Strawberry Cream
Today:
Apricot Drift x Coffee Bean. Hoping for a very healthy miniature with a nice color
Take it Easy x Strawberry Cream. Seed parent has Double Knock Out as a parent and is of the same cross as Whimsy. Looking for a healthy striped miniature or smaller shrub rose.
My Strawberry Cream tends to pass on scent and stripes. I’ve also noticed that when used with semi- double roses there can be increased petal count. It’s a good parent.
