germination

My pink cloud x golden celebration crossings get maple leafes like on the flag of canada. funny…

Looks healthy!

Finally had my first round of germinations. I was actually surprised at how many seeds started germinating. All of them were from the same parent, Golden Glow.

Had 6 Golden Glow X AppleJacks and there are a ton of seeds starting to split. Also had 1 Golden Glow x OP. Its a little early for me but they should be fine. I took them out of the fridge and put them on a shelf by the garage door. I thought it would be cool enough to keep them from germinating. I suppose the up and downs in temps kicked off the Golden Glow seeds.

Glad to be back to growing seedlings again. Didnt get a chance to do any hybridizing summer of 06 because of my move to Idaho. As a result, I didnt have any seedlings for Spring O7. This year was a pretty small crop as my roses hadnt established yet. This summer will be a different story. All my really important roses are getting huge and ready for some more serious work.

I’ve had over 150 germinations so far. A couple of the seedlings have buds. I took some more crosses out of the fridge today, so about 1/3 of my seeds are now out of the fridge and I should have many more germinations soon. This is a fun time of year!

My Sevilliana (Buck) seedlings are still germinating…and it snowed today x_X I have never seen a rose germinate this early outside, and through snow no less. Too bad it is a pollen mix of about 7 tetraploids, or I could speculate which male parent is helping, too. Im gonna guess Pretty Lady, though.

Germinations here are really starting to take off. I am getting more damp-off than usual though since I had to use a different potting soil than I usually use due to a shipping mix-up. I prefer Sunshine Mix, but ended up with a local kind that was not as good.

There are lots of exciting crosses - I can’t wait to see blooms!

sorry to hear you lost your seedlings jim.

1 Treasure Trove x Marchenland germinated. It’s beginnen here.

Lot of germinations from 2 roses which are very good seedparents if I see this.

Same but closer:

Think this is from a Canina.

Don’t know what I have to do with so many OP seedlings. :-S

Looks like they could use more light. Soon you can cull cull cull!

Those are great seedlings Joan. Is KR1 yours?

Robert, KR1 and Kendra are both my seedlings.

Sevilliana x mixed tetraploid pollen pollen is coming up en mass.

Rosa rugosa alba x mixed tetraploid pollen is germinating nicely.

Solitaire x Roar! is coming up nicely.

Purple Heart x Firefighter (Im not sure what I was thinking with this cross, but I dont like the idea anymore) is germinating.

There are other scattered germinations in 1’s and 2’s here and there, but not like the above in volume.

And so it starts…

I’m especially looking forward to the first two! All of the pollen is from dynamic colored parents, so we will see what comes through. It’s always a gamble when crossing to species!

Sometimes I make crosses and then wonder later what I was thinking.

Usually this means that I’ve changed the way I think about a particular cross or parent because of some new information I’ve gained.

I gave away some crosses this season deciding not to sow them. I should have given more away.

Joan, I like the direction you’re heading in with those yellows. I wish Westerland was more dependable for seed here. I think we are too warm most of the year.

Yeah, the Westerland line can be a total heat-hater. You should see Autumn Sunset in full mass in an Oregon spring tho. It is amazing!

I remember what I was thinking. It was the last cross of the year, and I reused a tag (I try to recycle materials as much as possible) because the original cross failed. So, I made a last ditch attempt with what was available around the beginning of July. I did that cross and Ebb Tide x Fragrant Cloud at the same time, ironically. I dislike that cross, too. But shrug you never know what pops up. Prolly a lot of mildew =P

Westerland blows pretty fast here. I keep mine in afternoon shade. I haven’t had any success with it for seed but there are OP hips on it now set last Fall. I may try it for pollen this Spring.

I also reuse labels. Glad to hear I’m not the only one who thinks economically. I reuse everything I can. I use one side then the other of all my labels.

Jadae, I was curious, Do you remember what was in the mixed tetraploid pollen that was used on R.rugosa alba? Was there anything that was one or two generations removed from a species? I was wondering if if being closer to a species would increase the fertility of the offspring.

Thanks,

Paul

They were mostly mauve, yellow and orange floribundas and minis such as Livin Easy, Baby Love, Ebb Tide, Princess Alice, Rabble Rouser, Pretty Lady, Purple Heart and Home Run.

Another set, which have not germinated yet, are from Baby Faurax, Rosa primula, White Drift, Gourmet Popcorn and Bengal china rose.

I regret forgetting to put Bukavu onto Rosa rugosa alba.
