First germination

Rob,

That would be great if Rugosa #3 does turn out to be a tetraploid and the cross with Sequoia Ruby takes. Finding or creating a tetraploid Rugosa would a great leap for creating hardy, healthy repeat blooming plants. My plants B0101 and B0104 are seedlings from a Rugosa that had its chromosomes doubled. Last year I thought B0104 was a tetraploid based on its pollen grain size but now I think it probably is a triploid. I raised a bunch of it OP seedlings this past year and the ones that bloomed were all diploid. Now I think B0101 is a tetraploid based on its pollen grain size and because it’s seeds are quite a bit larger than B0104.

Adam,

Thanks, I think you mean me (there are too many Pauls on the forum, though the others haven’t been on this thread). But it’s funny, I think I’m doing pretty humdrum stuff compared to what others are doing. And of course it never happens fast enough. But your (Rise & Shine x L83) looks like a great rose and I see you used it a lot. I haven’t used L83 yet but I may this year. I have a number of its offspring that I have used and will again this year. Is the Love & Peace you used the Ralph Moore rose or the Ping Lim Rose? I’ve thought about using the Ping Lim rose on something healthy because when it does bloom it’s great. I think it’ll good rose to pass on a deep yellow.

Andre,

I hope the Prairie Lass x Honeysweet seeds germinate for you. I love Honeysweet and have tried it’s pollen on a number of roses, but have gotten very few seeds or seedlings from the crosses. I’ll keep trying until something takes.

Paul I was talking about you. I can see lots of potential coming from your crosses. Nothing really marketable but stuff that in a few generations can really be the beginning of something special. I definitely know what you mean by it not going fast enough. This (Rise & Shine x L83) took three years to bloom. It surprised me how bright the flowers were coming from Rise N Shine. I kept three from this cross and this was one of the two top ones. The third one always has some leaf spots which I think are Cercospora leaf spot but I am not entirely sure. So I decided to take a leap of faith that this first seedling would produce good seedlings. So far many of these seedlings are showing they are vigorous. Almost all of them have a hint of pine scent to their foliage but I expect this will disappear as they get older. If I remember right (Rise & Shine x L83) also had this scent when it was young also. Hopefully I will get something that is healthy and repeats bloom.

This Love and Peace cross I did in remembrance of Mitchie Moe because I remember her saying in one of her articles that Love and Peace produced healthy miniatures and I always wanted to try it after I read that. So after she died I decided to go ahead and do this cross. But I think I got the wrong Love and Peace. I only realized this in the fall after I did my cross. I used the one created by Lim. But looking at it Lim’s Love and Peace probably the better route to go anyways. By the way two of these seedlings have buds already. By the look of the plants I wished I had done more of this cross.

Kim,

The first of the Cal Poly x Rayon ButterFED is blooming. It starts off as a rich orange color and ages to a peach/apricot/tan kind of mixture. It’s semi-double to double and has no scent. So far it appears that it might be a mini. Very pleasing looking over all. I’ll try to get a picture to post here.

How neat Rob! Mine are no where near flowering, but it’s been in the high thirties at night and fifties during the day. Congratulations! I’d love to see pictures!

A couple more sprouts were potted up over the weekend. It appears the The 777 Rose has good seed fertility. My plant was still small this year but I decided to use it in a few crosses as a seed parent to test it. Of the 6 bags of crosses I got (1 hip each with up to 10 seeds) I have gotten several sprouts in 4 of them. I don’t know what it will produce but I am hoping for some good colors with little to no thorns. All the pollen parents are unidentified as the tags were unreadable (at least I have the listing of the crosses so I might be able to guess).

Latest germinations:

Cal Poly x Lynnie

Cal Poly x Pretty Lady

Thanks for the seeds Kim.

You’re welcome! Thanks for giving them a good home! Those three are the fastest germinators here in my seed boxes. They’re also the most prolific. I think combining the three into one should create a super breeder.

I have Lynnie and just ordered Pretty Lady for spring so I’ll be playing with them this season.

Germinated today:

Sequoia Ruby x Peachy Cream

Peach Drift x OP

Does anyone have anything yet from Peach Drift?

I am using ā€˜Coral Drift’, because David determined it to be diploid. It gets a bit of mildew on the buds here but otherwise it is quite healthy and its pollen seems to work well and is a real bloom machine. I haven’t tried it as a seed parent and don’t recall seeing hips on it. There’s a good chance ā€˜Peach Drift’ is a triploid but it looks nice. We can get ours here: http://svc129.wic021v.server-web.com/plant-nursery/drift-roses/

I was hoping that PD was not a diploid so I’d be very happy with triploid. Thanks Simon.

Rob,

I crossed Peach Drift with a number of things, and the only hip that survived (low to the ground in a famous vole area) is an early cross with Cinco de Mayo. I have two seedlings planted up from that cross. I did try it a few years ago and got a couple of really petite (but nicely formed) shrubby seedlings, but the flower looked very similar to P.D.and I probably did not hang on to them long enough to really give them a chance.Hopefully this cross with CdM will be more floriferous.

Jackie,

Petite is exactly what I’m looking to obtain. Has your CdM seedlings blossomed yet? You should get a more floriferous using that one.

Rob, The PD X CdM seedlings are only 2-3 weeks old. I grow all my seedlings outdoors, no cover, and we have been having nights in the mid 30’sF down to 28F. The banana that shares the area with the seedlings froze back two nights ago. So all my seedlings take about 7-8 weeks to get to first bloom stage or sometimes more. They just kind of grow really slowly, and I can not fault them on that. I move a bit slow in this weather too. I should get a few more germinations (hopefully) and I will post photos when blooms happen.

Jackie I do the same, every thing grown outdoors from the germination trays to seedlings. We average around 28F here and I only bring them in when there is a severe frost.

Another exciting seedling germinated:

ILC1-72-1 x OP

Can’t wait to see how this one turns out.

Wonderful Rob! Congratulations! I haven’t found many self set hips on this, in fact, the only ones I have, I sent to you.

Hi Kim. I don’t remember you sending me seeds from this one but the memory is not what it used to be. You sent me cuttings and I was successful rooting one. I only had one hip on the plant at the end of the season that barely had any color to it but thought what the heck. There was only one seed and I didn’t expect it to germinate but am pleasantly surprised. There is some great genes here and hope it will bloom while under lights for me. I’ll keep you posted.

Sorry Rob! We’re related regarding memory! I know I found one (or two) hips on the original seedling and the resulting seed was sent somewhere. Oh, well, doesn’t matter. I’m excited to see what, if anything, results from it! Good luck!

Two photos of my first flower of the year. It is Sequoia Gold x Love and Peace
