2017 germinations

Congratulations, Jackie! I’m glad someone else is also playing with Minutifolia. Perhaps we can trade pollen to “double” our chances?

I am up for that! I think I am going to spend more time and energy in this direction. The last yrs’ seedling is very generous with pollen, and the new canes on it (this seasons) have lots of thorns-quite nasty looking ones, but none at the base. It bloomed late into the winter and set a few hips in Dec./Jan.

Neat! There are many selfs and crosses out back from L56Min#2 as well as quite a few potential hybrids using Minutifolia’s pollen on Golden Angel, Pacific Serenade, Apricot Twist, Golden Horizon, Lilac Charm and several of my seedlings germinating now. And, there are the other L56 X Minutifolia seedlings from the same year as L56Min#2 which will flower again this year, so there should be some fun things to trade! We’re going to have fun!

Love the idea of the potential results from R.m. progeny. And, Kim, I will keep you posted of anything I get on my end, of course… Is there a different protocol for working with desert species? I’m guessing the seeds might perhaps want a good flushing to eliminate the inhibitors, and then sprout rather quickly? Seems that might be the best M.O. for a desert species… What experiences do you guys have working with such?

In my ‘update’ post, I did not correctly ID the seedling, {(Madame Bravy x Rt66) x Moondance x Midas Touch)} X Rosa minutifolia–full name. I’d love to just attribute that to it being late but it wasn’t all that late, just poor memory. Philip, Most of my minutifolia seedlings (about 25) all germinated early, in Dec. before getting the cold treatment. I am hoping these are all crosses, but all of them have a similar structure and growth pattern and only a few have much in the way of bristles. When I get a few more, I’ll feel more comfortable in subjecting a few to a little bit of drought treatment, but not yet.

I’ve only raised five Minutifolia SEEDS and all five germinated. Unfortunately, all five succumbed to terminal mildew months after germinating and being transplanted into individual pots. I simply planted them in the same soil and in the same seedling table as all the others and they came up just fine. I haven’t experienced the horrid mildew issues with any of the hybrid Minutifolia seedlings.

Just to add some spice…these are the crosses using Minutifolia pollen germinating right now.
