They’re finally beginning to flower and I am delighted! There will be more as seedling after seedling begins pushing buds. These are in flower now…
Very nice Kim! Thank you for sharing those with us. All of them are interesting given the parentage. I particularly like GAX1-72-1Hugonis. Love the color and bloom form on that one. Congratulations!
Thank you, Rob! The cans still carry the numbers I used to send you cuttings last year, so I can very likely tell you which you may have from those cuttings, if they succeeded. I am numbering them in the order in which they flower.
What rooted and may have survived the winter are according to the label:
L56-1 x 1-72-1Hugonis
Pretty Lady x 1-72-1Hugonis
Does that sound right?
Those are some crosses out there, yes. The photos were also numbered to differentiate between the several L56-1 crosses. There are fewer Pretty Lady crosses, but more than one. L56 resulted in the greatest number. There are two more of the L56 batch setting buds but not showing what to expect from them yet. The Pink Petticoat crosses aren’t opening yet, and the Fedtschenkoana crosses are starting to set buds.
Kim, this is great progress. Congratulations!

Thank you, Betsy! It’s those marvelous fertile triploid minis. They’ll cross with almost anything and are real chameleons. Look at Golden Angel X R. Californica nana. 'Golden Angelcalnana' Rose That puppy flowers spring through fall!
Woo hoo!!!, I like them all, but that last one is especially nice!
Really cool!
Well done Kim, if I had to choose any of them it would be between the third and fourth for me.
Thank you! I hoped you would see the YELLOW ones, David! Hopefully, they’ll set seed…
Well done Kim, you can sure see the influence of R.hugonis in all of the seedlings. It’s always fascinating to see how different people do different combinations of crosses. I have Secrets Out also and I would have never thought of crossing it with 1-72-1H. But it makes good sense to combine the size and substance of SO with 1-72-1H. You have better luck crossing 1-72-1H with minis also. I tried it on Petit Pink and Roxy and only got 12 seeds from Roxy with no seedlings. I actually got the most seeds from a cross with a (Ross Rambler #1 OP) which had quite a bit of Spinosissima in it, but no seedlings. I only have two seedlings from a (Showy Pavement x R.blanda) x (Marie Pavie x R.blanda) cross. You can see the influence of R.hugonis more in one seedling and not as much in the second. I have a little pollen left but it’s two years old now and I don’t know if it’s still viable, but I plan to try a few crosses with it again this year anyway.
Congratulations, Paul! 1-72-1Hugonis is flowering now. Would you like fresh pollen, or some from the newer ones? I’ve been maniacally collecting the new ones due to the extreme rains we’re having.
Thanks Kim, I‘d love some new pollen but it’s tough to decide which one. I’m leaning towards 1-72-1 hugonis flora pena right now. Which would you suggest?
I don’t know, Paul. I am watching it all dry and nothing to use as seed parents starting to flower yet. I’m not really sure what I would put any of them on at this point.
Yeah that’s always a problem trying to figure out which flowers to put the pollen on. Why don’t you send me some me some 1-72-H Flore Plena pollen.
Thanks
There won’t be as much as there would be of the single flower type, but I’ll get it sent as soon as things dry out.
Thanks Kim,
I won’t need that much, I’ll probably only do 3 or 4 different crosses with it. Half of my plants were transplanted last fall so I don’t know which ones or how many I’ll be able to do crosses with. You sent me a lot of 1-72-1 pollen last time and I pollinated 63 flowers but I still had pollen left over. If it’d be easier you could send some SO72hug#1 pollen as well, enough for 20 to 30 pollinations each. No big hurry I won’t be able to use it for 2 ½ to 3 months.
Thanks again
Paul
I really like GAX1-72-1Hugonis and 'SO17Hug#1. Good job!
Thanks, Jim. I appreciate it! It’s fun studying the varying results from these fertile triploids. L5617Hug#3 is the most modern looking of the bunch. I cut it to open indoors so I’d get to see it during the torrential rain the other day. It really reminds me of an Iceland Poppy on a more traditional looking floribunda/shrub plant. It has got that poppy look about it Kim, I like the shape.
