What did you cross this year?

Oh I did try 6 crosses of Eyeconic Pink Lemonade on Anne Endt. All but one of these dropped their hip really early. It was interesting seeing something that did not even give me false hope like a lot of hips do. It really did not like that pollen. I do have one hip but maybe it is really selfed.

Oh on a side not some of the bumble bees around here have figured out on the rugosas they can come the day before they open and bite through the back of the flower and get to the pollen that way.

"low humidity with hours of overhead, oscillating sprinkler for nearly a week "

Kim, if I did that, then I would be eliminating my ability to distinguish between the roses that could take the dry heat and those that couldn’t. It’s so dry here that most of the roses have trouble keeping hydrated particularly when the wind kicks up. And many of them either stop blooming or produce blooms that resembles a small pile of disgarded garbage, lol! I’m hoping to breed roses that can take this blast furnace and still look decent. There also seems to be a cutoff of around 100 degrees where most of the roses choke. 95 fine, 100ish borderline, 105 NOT good. Anyway that’s been my experience here in the sonoran desert.

By the way, I got about 15 plants from the cuttings of “Show n’ Tell” you sent me. Fabulous bloomer even under these conditions!

I understand Judith. Had we not been on seemingly endless wells with incredibly low water rates, I would have never watered like that, but that canyon was truly odd. One side of the fire road, where there were houses on the crest of the hill/ridge top, had extremely high ground water. In fact, there was a sink hole at the end of the street that required several cement mixer loads to stop the flow of the underground river. Several homes had slippage issues on their foundations. That water seeped out and ran down the fire road. It was supposedly so highly alkaline, it couldn’t be effectively cleaned. The other side of the small valley, across the fire road, where the garden sat, there was virtually no ground water.

I can completely understand your desire to determine which of your roses will withstand your climate. I’m glad Show n’Tell rooted so well for you. It should be extremely healthy there and I can imagine how wonderful that color should be there! It’s also extremely fertile, so you should have some real fun with it!

This is drifting away from the thread, but I’m wondering if you, Judith, or anyone else here in such a hot climate have tried Paprika. Something about the way its foliage looks here makes me think it would be very heat tolerant.

Joe, which Paprika are you referring to? HMF lists 4 of them.

Oso Easy Paprika.

The question for me is what DIDN’T I cross. I totally subscribe to Fara’s mantra “Cross all the roses”!! This year I made 130 crosses and as of this week I count 66 hips set.

This year I decided to throw everything I could on MISS BLOOMS ALOT resulted in hips from Blushing Knockout, Dragon’s Blood, Winecup, Sugarbooger, Cora Catherine (Outta the Blue X Royal Amethyst), Persian Sunset and Alexander.

SUGARBOOGER is a rose I registered this year and it appears to be a good seed and pollen parent setting some OP hips and also hips from Eyeconic Lemonade, Dragon’s Blood, Betty of Dublin(a seedling from Robert Stiba which is a cross of Betty Boop X Dublin Bay) Raspberry Lemonade and Fairy Dust (Rise-n-Shine X Miss Blooms Alot).

EBB TIDE set hips with Archduke Charles, Smoky, Liebesperle, Raspberry Lemonade, Lillian Austin and (Heritage X Outta the Blue).

DAME 'd COEUR yielded hips with Ducher, Cadenza, Winecup, Little Orphan Annie(a dark red seedling of unknown parentage), Raspberry Lemonade and (Heritage X Outta the Blue)

EYECONIC LEMONADE set hips with Pumpkin Patch, Ginger Glow, Sugar booger and Mixed Pollen.

ATOCHA GOLD has hips from Honey Perfume, Liebesperle, Pumpkin Patch and Sugarbooger.

This year I added IRISH MIST and it has hips withGinger Glow, Little Orphan Annie and Smoky.

After reading the thread on blue roses I am glad to say that LITTLE ORPHAN ANNIE set a hip with Ebb Tide really hoping that one germinates.

There are others but these are the main mother plants this year.

And in case you are wondering, here are pictures of Fairy Dust, Cora Catherine, Little Orphan Annie.

I am not done yet, but I am doing fewer crosses this year.

I am doing some proprietary crosses like:

(Remembrance x DKO) x (Rosa canina x Baby Love)

(Remembrance x DKO) x (Sevilliana (Buck) x Pretty Lady)

Some mixed crosses like:

{Dortmund x (Carefree Marvel x Shadow Dancer)} x Birthday Girl

Ketchup and Mustard x (Selfridges x Freedom)

Some wide crosses like:

Palmengarten Frankenfurt x Rosa hirtula

Purple Pavement x Persian Flame

and some industrial crosses like:

Trumpeter x Summer Wind

Birthday Girl x Miracle on the Hudson

That is the general pattern, but I will posta list when I am finished. I THINK 2 of the 6 hips of PP X PF took… they are swelling and turning purple, when the other 4 never swelled and turned yellow *crosses fingers for germinations w/out rust…"

Little Orphan Annie(a dark red seedling of unknown parentage)

Such provenance!

While I am usually meticulous with my recordkeeping sometimes a tag gets lost. In 2008 I thought I had lost all of my seedlings to fruit gnats. I did find this one lonely survivor but the tag was so weather faded that it was unreadable. I searched my records of crosses made that year and seeing the color of the bloom this spring I suspect it is an open polinated seedling of Francis Dubrieul. However, since I am not 100% sure, I hesitate naming the suspected parentage. However, it has a lighter center and a very dark almost black halo on the petals and the color was beautiful and this year it set a cross with Ebb Tide and two OP hips. I dislike refering to roses by numbers so I often name them even though they may never be registered. It makes it easier to communicate with the DH if I call a rose by a name rather than a number. Since this little seedling was the “lone survivor” and its parents unknown Little Orphan Annie seemed like a fitting name. This picture of the open bloom looks a bit more like Francis Dubrieul.

Whatever it is I love the coloring on it Joan. I am a sucker for that type of red.

Wow! Compared to most everyone else on this thread, we haven’t done many pollinations.

Or, maybe I should say that we have pollinated a lot, just not as many different types of crosses…

And a few other ‘odds and ins’

Joan,

I love some of your names-a red headed orphan? of course ‘little orphan annie’, and I don’t believe Miss Blooms a lot is yours’ but the name sure fits. I’m not sure I want to hear where Sugar booger comes in, but I’ll bet it has a story.

Nat,

All I can picture is ‘who gets to seed all these hips?’ Pity the poor soul. I hope that is what students and lab assistants are for.

The picture from the first post sums it up for me as I am testing a lot of my roses for fertility. I started a month early this year and estimate I have about 2-3 more weeks before timing will prevent me from doing more. I calculate I have done 1181 different crosses so far with over 80% still holding on. Most of my Bucks are brand new this year and I may get a bloom or two to add into the mix yet this year.

Sorry for all the info. My excel sheet is a lot easier to read than this post but at least I can share some of the info. The numbers that are less than 10 are generally the varieties I am testing this year. Those in the 20s or more have proven themselves already.

Joan, LITTLE ORPHAN ANNIE is brilliant and I also would like to know how Sugar booger came about, I think it might have something to so with the "lemonade " name, only guessing.

Shelling a ton of hips from the same cross is the easy part, Jackie. That’s what they made blenders for! Takes just a few minutes, a bit too much water, but no fibers all over you and you can process a bunch of them in very short order. It’s cleaning the ones and twos of each cross that take time and make me itch!

Kim,

I am so used to thinking 2-7 crosses ea., that I don’t even think about blenders. Blenders are for icy fruit smoothies when the temps are over 85.

Wow there are some great crosses out there. I’ve decided to use fewer pollen sources this year and to also use more of my own seedlings. I’m still crossing until the end of June, but here is a list so far.

(1) Oso Easy Paprika - Prairie Celebration, Everest Double Fragrance x Morden Sunrise, Gemini x Baby Love

(2) Morden Sunrise x Home Run - Alberta x John Cabot, George Vancouver, Prairie Harvest, Prairie Celebration x Paintbrush, Outta the Blue x Baby Love

These are all my crosses so far-am waiting on some pollen from outside source, and rebloom of two shrubs. Most of these are between 1-7 hips, with most at 2-3. Good hip set so far this yr. Will add Elle X Rt 66 to list soon, good source of russets.
