Stanwell Perpetual

I used SP pollen on three different plants this past year: B0101(a Rugosa that produces 2n pollen), B3602(Hot Wonder x 1T20) and E3402((Goldbusch x (Easy Going x Suzanne)) this past year. I’ve gotten about 25% germination rate from each of the crosses. A number of the seedlings from the Rugosa cross have issues but there are a fair amount that look heathy. The seedlings with the other two seed parents look good.

Sorry, I had a mistake in my last post.
while repotting my seedlings I realised one seedling i deemed to be SP was something different, while another I didn´t watch closely was SP open pollinated and healthy.
So now I have two growing quite OK, one stunted but still growing and one that seems not to want to grow.

Two OP seedlings of SP are still growing fine. Both were not juvenile flowering or flowering at all during the first season. Leaves look very similar to SP.

During spring/summer I pollinated several times all available SP flowers with a mix of available pollen. In autumn I could harvest 27 hips with a total of 39 seeds.
So seedset was much improved by handpollination. This makes me think that SP acceptes at least some pollen and that most seeds will be hybrid.

Both of my SP seedlings produced a flower in late autumn. One of them opened on Nov. 21. the other is still a bud and probably won’t open befor winter. Color of the flower is white with a hint of creem in the center, no pink at all. Have a look at some fotos here 'WS487' rose photos
I have no idea what this late autumn flower might mean with respect to reflowering and will probably not get any info on fertility.

Both seedlings grew well during this season and produced flowers at allmost all times, comparable to SP. So SP seems to pass the trait of repeat flowering on quite well. WS487 has a flower that is very similar to SP but slightly darker pink. The other WS480 has single but a bit untidy flowers in pale pink. To see pictures look here:

Hi Werner
Thank you for the update on your seedlings. Good information to have. Do they have any fragrance?

Hi Margit
WS487 has fragrance, i would say similar to SP, maybe a bit more fruity, but I am not good at describing fragrance. With WS480 I can not say, I think I never smelled it.

My latest plan is to make crosses with Felix Leclerc, available from High Country Roses. Felix Leclerc has Suzanne in its background, as well as R. kordesii, in which I am interested, but which now is almost impossible to find in the U.S. My first crosses are going to be with Larry Daniels, mostly because I have it and it has a good bloom, repeats well and is disease resistant. Felix Leclerc is reputed to have good rebloom, consistent with SP, as well as with R. kordesii and New Dawn, which also is in its background. It should result in interesting crosses with good cold-hardiness.

Uploaded fotos of WS480 to hmf

Great to see repeat-flowering offspring! A follow-up in my newsletter reporting your success will be forthcoming! Congrats.
Stephen

Your seedlings are very nice.
I have 2 Stanwell Perpetual OP seedlings too.
They germinated in 2010.
The spring 2009 was very hot and the Stanwell P. sets hips.
The seedlings are oncebloomer.
