I figured this might be of interest to some on this forum: this is a first generation modern x gallica rose with pretty distinct spotting and marbling on the petals. I have a hypothesis that this, at least in part, comes from overproduction of pigment that more delicate petal structures seen in OGR or species have trouble holding. Unfortunately this is not the circular watermarking that some Gallicas have.
The lineage is Duchesse De Montebello (in commerce as) × Miracle on the Hudson
There may be something to this. I’ve raised a spotted/“watermarked” seedling from R. setigera Serena Group × ‘Grappl’, and can only guess that there might be some factor in Sect. Synstylae (/Caninae) that can manifest itself in the progeny of certain lucky combinations. Unfortunately, mine may be both triploid and sterile, although the latter remains to be seen pending further attempts.
R. setigera is definitely prone to that sort of spotting in the wild. Not sure I’ve ever seen any other North American species exhibit that trait so you might be right about it being a synstylae trait.
