So here are two seedlings from OP ‘Rugelda’ seed that germinated this year. Neither has produced a bloom yet, but one is strong and spotless, while the other is weak and prone to PM & BS. I kept hoping it would kick into gear, but I guess it’ll be compost.

I definitely look forward to seeing how it is when it blooms! I have one seedling I kept from Rugelda x The Squire from years ago. I keep thinking I should revisit Rugelda.

Oh HURRAH!!
Even though it got munched a bit by the walking venison, this unflowered seedling from last year has TWO BUDS visible. Pretty excited.
And I’ve got 6 or 7 OP seedlings from ‘Rugelda’ growing in my boxes this year! Rugelda itself is budding up quite nicely and I have pollen in the freezer waiting for blooms to be ready.
(FWIW, the Canadian-bred ‘J. P. Connell’ looks like it’ll be the first hybrid rose to bloom in my garden again this year. I’ve had no luck germinating its OP seed, but I’m totally down to spread its pollen about! It’s a lovely rose here on the BC coast, even if the yellow colour promised in bud is so fleeting in the open flower. Still pretty. Huh. I should put it on ‘Mutabilis’ and see if I can’t boost vigour and more yellow at the same time.)

ME too!! It’s been a very weird spring (March-April) here, with very little rain, a lot more sun, and low temperatures overnight as a rule. BS has taken hold of a couple of the Usual Suspects, and Conrad F. Meyer is already rusting, before it even pops a bloom open.
Sigh. I do not like the climate change.
Should be an interesting year for seedlings. lol

There are several registered roses that used Rugelda as a parent, so it’s certainly got the ability to produce worthwhile progeny.

At first, I thought “red-marked yellow” like it’s parent, but as the sepals pull back, ORANGE. Interesting! The foliage is shiny and reasonably clean under no-spray conditions.

Wonderful! It might be a fun one to breed back with various rugosas and see what interesting colors might appear!
It’s a very pretty colour, with reddish stamens providing a high-contrast against the golden centre of the flower. Now to see if it repeat-flowers, because if it don’t…
(Wrestling it back into rugosa isn’t in the cards; the effort and space required are beyond me.)

I’ve been fretting for the last couple months that my orange, single Rugelda seedling shown above in year two with its first flowers was going to be a once-bloomer, as basals erupted forth, but no more flowering from laterals off first year wood…

It also looks inclined to climb, and those prickles are pretty mean-looking. Handle with care.
