"Red Mini" Historic Moore Breeder

Here is something I didn’t expect to find. Rogue Valley Roses is advertising “Red Mini”, a Ralph Moore creation from 1962 Red Mini – Rogue Valley Roses , 'Red Mini' Rose used to create New Penny. 'New Penny' Rose

It appears perhaps Paul Barden passed this on from the URL of the entry on the RVR site “red mini from paul”. (Edit, Paul reports he has no idea what it may be as he never grew this rose.) Red Mini only created New Penny, but its genes live on in the MANY offspring it spawned.

Another Moore breeder of interest RVR has now is Nutshop. The name signified a Nutkana-moss which grew by the shop at Sequoia Nursery. NUTSHOP – Rogue Valley Roses . 'Nutshop' Rose .

I don’t know what that rose is. It is either mislabeled or it didn’t come from me. I have never grown the “red mini” that parented ‘New Penny’.

I do, however, still grow “Nutshop” (thanks, Burling, for that name!). It’s an odd beast; it lacks vigor here in my PNW climate, and it gets Blackspot really badly. (Think; total defoliation) But it’s got fascinating dark mossing, and the bloom color is a “fruit salad delight”. I did use it in breeding a few times twenty years back, but only ever got a couple of mildly interesting seedlings. I think it may be worth using in breeding, but you’d have to mate it with something with 1) much more vigor and 2) much better disease resistance. But I suspect that if you can match it with something that can produce a LOT of seedlings, there’d be something genuinely interesting in there somewhere.
