Pure magic (MATTGrex)

So far I’ve used it as a mother plant with Little Artist, Kardinal kolorscape (before I knew it was triploid), and Blondy.

It almost always forms exogenous seeds. The seeds are always on the smaller end but still healthy.

This is my first year where I’m trying to germinate rose seeds, so I can’t say anything yet as far as results go. But it is a fantastic rose, even though it has a mildew problem.

It would be interesting to hear if anyone else has used this rose and even had success with their seedlings.

Look at all those exogenous seeds. On average the exogenous seeds are almost the same amount as the seeds in the hips

Don’t rule out Kardinal Kolorscape just because she is triploid – at least not as a pollen parent. If you flood the recipient mother with pollen there is a decent chance that some grains will have the ability to pair-up. I have had seed off a diploid momma.

This is the nice thing about being a smaller amateur hybridizer. Most of us don’t have the realty to play the usual numbers game towards obtaining a great seedling, but for us it makes sense to invest the effort into the tougher crosses that are likely to have lower yields.

K.K. is a great rose with strong health and relatively high drought tolerance. It’s dark petals do, however, tend to fry in a Texas summer, and it will only extremely rarely manage to set seed despite the open flowers being regularly visited by pollinators.
