Odd Ball Crossing survivors of Winter 1 and 2 +

Test crossing beds early winter results of life. Most very small and benefited from snow cover:

Caroyal x Grannie’s Rose (x2 germinated 2025)

R laxa x Mdm del la Roche Lambert (x1 germinated 2025)

Merveille x John Cabot ( 3+ winters)

Merveille x Porsilii Kauntor (2+ winters)

Unknowns 3 (tags unreadable/lost - last time for black Sharpie)

Merveille x species - a prized crossing showing evidence of tip damage but healthy and intact - (red pliable buds)

Second example of same age as the above prized cross may have finally shown itself, but was very susceptible to PM in first fall.

The Merville xPorslliini Kaunota has a hardy spino species pollen parent (both roses from Finnish origins). Second time for me a hardy pollen parent has kicked out the winter jam in a crossing with the same Gallica (not hardy for me).

** Note 1 March 22**

Good thing l put my hybridizing progress on this forum with photo proof. File Paper gets lost.

Looks like one of the unknowns could be;

Caroyal x Mdm de la Roche Lambert from 2025.

These 2025 germinated moss-rugosa-laxa hybrids crosses (weak) had their crossed hips survive the fire and brimstone wrath of the Nordic gods that all but wiped out a season of hybridizing in 2024.

Second photo is a better than average poor writing medium selection result after winter, and of label writing and (ir)revalent info clutter by me. But l can decipher it but still a pita. Bad spelling due to me. Seedling planted 2025 so tag 1 winters experience.

It’s a friend’s seed donation l germinated during lean 2024 season. It’s from their plant of another Eastern Canadian hybridizer creation, l believe.

l deciphered it as (my tag), its a cross of R arkansana (sic) x Applejack - plant in photo results from op seed and year is year original mother plant was “created” by “Ami” in Quebec.

Believe 2005 for original Quebec mother plant - lousy 5.

The stuff written in front of the first A’s have not clue as they look like 1’s.

Make tag writing brief, pick right tag info / material and right media. Says he who ignores learnings - back to pencil - punished myself.

Cross very hardy.

But various tries of Applejack alone were not hardy in my garden. However Applejack OP seeds went to Finland from a Minnesota arboretum and survived to become “Lumo”. I have a Lumo, and it’s hardy and still in north facing back gardens. Crossing attempts to-date not successful for me.
