New Seedlings for 2012

Kim, you took the words out of my mouth. That almost looks like Nuccio’s Pearl with its’ intense ruby edging.

That’s what I was thinking, Jackie. I had to look at the foliage to make sure!

I said to the fellow who bred China Sunrise when it came together with Baronne Ed Rothschild, nice colour combinations would occurr.

Here are two others which I think were shown earlier.

Just so I’m understanding the reason for the supposition, would it be that the russets have such interesting potential, that a warm blended orange/peach rose such as China Sunrise, having Jocelyn (and Parador) as parents offers the potential… or what was the reasoning?

I don’t believe we have China Sunrise in the states, but she’s very attractive. Love your seedlings too.

Phillip, as a rule I don’t use russets because they are brownie looking. If you look at for example Julia’'s Rose, the under layering colour is yellow with a layer of mauve cells on top of it. I went for China Sunrise because the colour saturation was quite intense and there was possibilty when crossed with Baronne Ed Rothschild great bicoloured seedlings would be formed. B Ed Roth throws great bicoloured seedlings, this I think goes back to Peace. Jocelyn, I would look at as a cultivar with a under lying colour of intense saturated very deep orange, would be good to know what was its breeding as well.

Here are a couple of newies

[attachment 1390 23i52j.jpg] The bloom quality is not to good as we had quite hot weather in the last 2 days. I like this type of colouring though.Queen Elizabeth X Breath of Life Seedling is still quite small around 8" , Foliage is healthy, hasn’t given any problems yet

Never having used such, admittedly, but I rather assumed that russets were a complete wild card, having as they do virtually every pigment within, and I thought that they therefore offered a lot of potential surprises. In my mind, a russet crossed with a bicolor has lots of interesting potential for interesting blends.

As I say, I’ve not worked with such ever. (I don’t need any more brown on any of my plants! I have enough dead and dying leaves. (Which begs the question: Based on that argument, why do I then grow yellow flowers to put atop my yellow-leaved plants?))

I gathered the bicolor came via Peace, but I wasn’t aware that BEdR tended to yield such pretty reliably. Very nice.

Thanks for sharing. Love those babies of yours. (How many crosses do you do in a year?? How many germinations???!)

Philip, BEdRoth is one of the best growing roses I have seen, does get BS here, but only that is once in a blue moon and very small levels. Its a great bloomer ,fertile and seed germination is very good. These traites are passed on to its offspring.

These days I only make around 20 crosses and with around 400 germinations. I research all my crosses 9mths prior to pollination as I avoid random crosses. At the moment I am trialing around 70 seedlings from last year.

Philip, you may have read this interesting article by E. B. LeGrice about Inheriting Unusual Colors in Roses. It is accompanied by Inheritance of Color in Roses. Thank you Paul B. for putting these up on Old Garden Roses and Beyond. I continually refer to that site!

Thank you Kim, and particularly thank you to Paul. Yes, I had read that, but it has been years. THanks for bringing it back to my attention.

I’m glad to see that site is still up!

Warren,

One of the many good things about this forum is that we have members from other parts of the world who post photos like you do when here in the US a lot of us are in the midst of winter. You do have some lovely seedlings and, as you say, show promise. A lot of us in the northern part of the US are about ready to sow seeds, so we do have a bit of a wait before we see any results. Seeing your blooms lifts the spirits on an otherwise dreary winter day.

The best to you in your efforts - look forward to seeing your photos.

Thanks again,

Thanks Joe.

I dont know how this will turn out in the end, this cultivar is still quite small in size, will have to wait and see. It has a good pong though.

[attachment 1411 BonSileneXChrysImp.jpg] Bon Silene X Chrysler Imperial foliage is very healthy, this is my quest to produce HT looking types suited for more warmer humid climates.

[attachment 1412 SpeksYellowXSeedling.jpg] Speks Yellow X Unamed Seedling foliage very good , bloom mid yellow with light orange blushing.
