Jim, yes, I agree - Fabulous! as a mother has produced mostly white offspring for me, and most of the other seedlings that have bloomed from this cross so far are white or off-white. I also have two Fabulous! x Bees Knees seedlings that have bloomed - both pretty much the same, cream colored with pink edges - actually very nice seedlings with a lot of substance and free of mildew so I will watch these as well.
This is a ( OP) of altissimo…has the looks of a climber…has 28 petals … altissimo has 4-6 petals…has no fragrance… and the color is a little different .To notice at every leaflet there is a flower bud.I think i’ll keep this one and see what it turns into
Hi Larry, I have used Altissimo quite a bit here in OZ. Mainly I use it as a seed parent as it sets hips very easily and germination rates are very good. Of all the seedlings I have raised and kept using Altissimo as the seed parent, only one you would call a large shrub/climber, all the others are of average height with very good vigour, the repeat for flowering is very good as well. Health of the offspring is very good with some being touched by a little BS but nothing really to get excited about. It probably depends on what you use as the pollinator in relation to health, but overall its a pretty good bet.
Here’s a first bloom on a Lynn Anderson x OP seedling I wanted to share that I think has potential. The color is a strong ‘hand-painted’ magenta pink with a yellow base and yellow reverse. Nice HT form when it was fresh. In a bed of seedlings with mildew, this one was fairly clean. Her color is really nice in person.
Great seedling pictures everyone. The first blooms are just about to open on a few of this year’s crop for me. Kind of reminds me of Christmas.
Thankfully germinations are slowing down for me. I am running out of space and it is easily another month or so before I can use my cold frame. A couple of interesting observations from this year’s crop. (1) Great plant form on the Prairie Harvest x Julia Child seedlings. Nice and compact. They really stand out from the rest of the seedlings. I’m seeing a few of the Alberta x Midnight Blue seedlings with that same compact form. Hopefully this translates into a nice compact garden shrub. (2) It really stood out this year how pollen parent influences germination percentage. Alberta, Carefree Beauty and Prairie Celebration have been great seed parents for me. They tend to accept most pollen sources and they have pretty decent germination percentages. But the Alberta x Home Run cross has not resulted in a single germination, while Carefee Beauty x Home Run has resulted in about a dozen seedlings. Both Persian Autumn and Persian Flame were used as pollen sources with all three of these seed parents, and I probably have a total of 6 seedlings. Meanwhile, the crosses involving Midnight Blue, Pretty Lady and John Cabot I stopped potting up after I hit 60 seedlings from the cross.
Oh my, you all have beautiful blooms already and mine have just begun to germinate. The 4 I had earlier never grew when I put them in the seed starter trays. I’m not sure why. Then after that I didn’t get any more germinations until today. We found three, 2 of Kim Rupert and 1 of Bashful. I really hope these will GROW! Can’t imagine what I’ll do all summer if I have no babies to tend!
Rambling Red x [Knock Out x William Baffin] is germinating like mad. I wonder if there’s a chance of getting something non-rambling out of this cross. The pollen parent isn’t exactly compact, either.
Other mom’s showing high germ:
Carefree Sunshine
Emily Carr
Prairie Joy
High Voltage
Morden Blush x William Baffin (she set very, very few hips but 5 out of 6 seeds have germinated.)
Paprika surprised me. I picked one up cheap last summer and used it to pollinate a number of things. Decent hip set. From Carefree Beauty I had a bunch of germinations already in mid-January. One with Paprika bloomed starting Sunday. It is extremely double and very deep pink/red color. I expected a pink single with maybe a touch of red around the edge. This is darker than most any C.B. with General Jaq. I don’t intentionally breed for red so I have few comparisons to make. The petals are short and pointed and the bud was very fat and stubby. Not your classic HT.
54-08-08 OP This cross is a Paul Barden cross of Midnight Blue x (Orangeade ® × R. fedtschenkoana). One of these actually has a bud on it at 1.5" Most are EXTREMELY thorny but there are some that exhibit much less thorniness. The selection process will be fun with these seedlings. All have grey colored leaves.
Smoke Rings x 1-72-1
Illusion x 1-72-1 One of these seedlings has wonderfully colored leaves that are grey with reddish highlights.
Ruglauca OP
Polka x 1-72-1 All of these seedlings have very serrated leaf edges
How is your Jim Lounsbery x John Cabot seedling doing? I obtained JL last fall and will be using it this season and was curious what’s turning out for you using JL.
I’d feared nothing would germinate this year with nearly zero rain and many days of eighty to nearly ninety degree spikes, but these are finally poking through.
