Manning's Blush – Has anyone tried using it in hybridizing?

Hi everyone,

Has anyone here ever tried using Manning’s Blush in a hybridizing program?

It’s an old hybrid of Rosa rubiginosa, with double blooms and beautifully scented foliage. Last year, it produced 14 hips, but unfortunately, all the achenes were aborted. This has made me question its fertility as a seed parent.

If anyone has experience with this rose—either as a seed or pollen parent—I’d be very interested to hear about it. Any insights would be appreciated.

Sorry sadly no real useful information for your needs from me.

Tried the below last year, but nature intervened and knocked off (intense hail storm) any hips that might have been forming. Lost about 90-95% of all crossings.

It was the only crossing where l used R xanthina as a pollen parent.

Will try again this year.

Nice rose when in bloom. I am in a very cold N/A zone.

Had two but a Suzanne eliminated one by competition … discovered that after had pollinated it and realized flowers were off. Lost those crosses also.

Thank you so much for your message, and I’m really sorry to hear that you lost so many of your crosses—that must have been incredibly frustrating after all the work involved.

It’s still helpful to know that you’ve tried using Manning’s Blush, and I really appreciate you sharing your attempted crosses. I’ll also be trying again with Manning’s Blush this year—fingers crossed it works out better this time for both of us!

Let’s hope the weather is a bit more cooperative this season.

I can’t improve upon Riku’s experience, but it has also been on my list to work with for a long time. I had a plant a number of years ago that was growing very well and was setting hips before it suddenly died during the growing season (likely from voles). I’ve only recently managed to obtain another start. This time, it’s staying in a container, at least until I can try to propagate more as insurance. On top of being fairly unique, it has been a surprisingly healthy rose in my disease-promoting climate where European OGRs don’t always perform very well. If I have any luck with it this second time around, I’ll be happy to share my experiences.
