Hulthemia persica hybrids

Jim, is that the open pollinated Tigris seedling that’s on your website? The eye looks much more larger than other persica hybrids that I’ve seen in photos.

What has been your experiance with the 3rd generation hybrids? How often and how strong the eye is in that generation?

Right now,

I’ve only have seedlings of Heidi X Persian Sunset, and Queen Elizabeth X Persian Sunset.

Thanks Robert, ‘Persian Sunset’ is a good pollen parent. It is hard to get repeat bloomers from it that also contain the blotch though. I have some that sprouted in 2005 that are just now blooming for the first time.

Liz, they are fun to work with but definitely need some space, especially for the ones that don’t bloom for 2 or 3 years! When they do bloom, many of them don’t have the blotch!

Enrique,I am having some 5th generation seedlings now, and darkening up the blotch seems as elusive as ever. I am getting some cleaner more rose-like plants though. Somehow, there seem to be other factors involved influencing the blotch gene(s). Something else that I wonder about - can the blotch be yellow or white??? If it is I won’t notice it. But it seems that there is no reason that lighter color blotches couldn’t also be possible.

Jim have you tried allowing some of these non-blotch seedlings to self then selecting out blotched seedlings?

It seems like it might be a way to go.

I have one I89-2 blossom left. I am going to try to make the best of it.

Robert, I89-2 has produced some good repeat bloomers for me. It just needs to be crossed with something that is not mildew prone. Do you have ‘Midnight Blue’? You might consider it as a seed parent.

I am having several new repeat blooming seedlings blooming and am getting larger blotch sizes now, though still looking for better intensity…

Yes Jim. I got ‘Midnight Blue’ this Spring and just started using it for pollen. Is it consistent s a young plant for seed?

I’ve used all the 189-2 pollen now. I mainly put it on this seed parent I created last season. It is clean.

I haven’t tested it for germination, so it’s a shot in the dark.

Robert, that’s a great seedling to put it on. Looks like a very clean single!
