Can this little one survive the winter? We’re zone 5-ish, northern Colorado. We have occasion bouts of below zero F.
This is my favorite seedling. My hand for scale.
Yes, a small first year like that can survive a zone 5 winter. I sometimes will heap some oak leaves around babies after ground has frozen in early December just for a little extra protection.
Thank you, Dan, and WELCOME!
The mulch sounds good. Also, if you want to take a cutting or two as a backup now and root and grow them indoors for the winter, you may like to have an extra plant or two of your favorite by spring. I used to do that with all of my first year keepers, but I soon had way too many plants to handle :0).
Thank you! Someone IS rooting that one, and other cuttings for me right now. Fingers crossed!
I had plenty of roses mulched with leaves in my early years in zone 4b and I lost too many roses. Who are the parents of yours - Tea/China heritage? Don’t take chances. Put on a big bag of leaves to cover the entire rose. With some mouse pellets underneath the bag. Our late October falls were so unpredictable - freezing heavy rains that froze solid and stayed and then little snow cover in December. Then a deep dive below zero week frequently in January. Then a thaw and back to subzero. Think of the worst scenario you might get and take precautions against that extreme. If your October remains warm or your spring is early, remove the bag as needed.
Thanks!
I guess the parents are tea.
