I have not found ‘Westerland’ to sulk in the heat here in my garden at all. It gets into the high 90’s several times a year (last Summer we had a few days well over 100) and ‘Westerland’, planted out in full blazing sun in a very exposed area, is a real trooper. Mine is on its own roots. Maybe that has something to do with it?
I guess I could try rooting ‘Westerland’ to see if it makes any difference. To tell the truth I don’t think that’s the problem. Mine just doesn’t want to flower. I know it produced at least a handful of blossom this Fall. I went out and checked. Even those didn’t set hips.
Perhaps the low humidity isn’t to it’s liking? Even the foliage has never looked happy. It gets plenty of water and the same care everything else does, which I confess is minimal.
Strange because it should perk up in Winter like everything else does. Instead it sits there.
Maybe it wants to go dormant but can’t? I’ll bet that’s at least part of the problem. Heat and low humidity probably don’t help.
I’ve taken photos and posted them to HMF real time most days of the year here for close to a decade.
I just checked and there isn’t one photo of ‘Westerland’ from my garden. Sad, I love the way it looks everywhere else.
I’ll try to get something out of it this Spring. I really should free up that real estate.
Looks like my little four petalled seedling is all grown up now
