New year, new thread!
Just noticed this baby had appeared.
It’s from the self pollination of my juvenile blooming OP seedling of Snow Pavement. I hope there will be more popping up.
Very curious to see if juvenile bloom gets passed on!

Oh HUZZZAH, eh @SeasideRooftop !?
I found the first germination in the fridge on Jan 1, in a lot of OP ‘François Juranville’, and am ALSO HOPING for juvenile bloom.
2026 starts off strong. As Shania sang: “Let’s go girls.”
i planted my first round of trays on christmas eve, and am seeing some germinations now about 10 days later. interestingly, the species roses have been the first to pop, with germinations from op r maximowicziana, virginiana, and gymnocarpa popping up. i also have a seedling of fru dagmar haustrup up. nothing from my crosses yet. it sure is nice in the grey and gloomy winter to go downstairs once a day and look for new germinations.
Ive put the Full Spectrum lights back on. It is a bit messy but need to find my yellow anti UV glasses in the storage lol. Seedlings showing up every day. Going to be a good 2026 hopefully.
I was so frustrated with my complete lack of germinations outside of OP seeds and lookalike weedlings that I sifted the seeds out of their soil and learned how to do embryo extractions. Lost a lot to learning the process, but my first real cross ever, Julie Andrews x Scentimental managed to start sprouting from the embryo.
I don’t think I’ll ever go back to direct sowing. I’m bad at it.
That looks very satisfying
You use the peroxide soaking? For me it works well. Every day a few new seeds pop open.
My biggest issue was overwatering while using a bad soil mix, but also probably keeping them in a part of my fridge that continually freezed and thawed depending on how full it was. Lost some to fungus gnats, probably harvested hips too early, planted them outdoors during a mild winter that has repeatedly oscillated from 70s to 20s in 48 hour timespan. Really just think of a dumb mistake and I probably made it.
But to answer your question use I do soak in a diluted peroxide mix before stratifying.
Snow Pavement × (Jean de Luxembourg × Glorious Babylon Eyes)
It’s my first time having seedlings with one of my crosses as a parent. There are nine of them ![]()
About twice as many had germinated since November, but a lot of them were too weak/ had poor vigor. This is the biggest one so far, just starting to express some texture on its foliage:
I don’t expect much more germination from this batch, but will definitely be trying this cross again in the spring.
How is Glorious BE with blackspot? I have 7 different BE roses and some are good, some are BS magnet.
Hi TimoNL,
In my garden, for whatever reason, blackspot has never really been an issue, so I can’t evaluate my roses on that. I breed only as a hobby for my own personal enjoyment so blackspot resistance isn’t a factor as long as they are ok regarding mildew, as both powdery and downy are much more of an issue here.
Once and only once (2 years ago?) I had a very brief outbreak of blackspot on a few roses, which I caught early and was quickly resolved. As far as I remember, GBE was not one of them, but that doesn’t mean anything. I seem to remember that most reviews don’t paint GBE as particularly BS resistant.
Sorry if that’s not very helpful!
Ah okok, lucky you blackspot is not an issue. Here in The Netherlands blackspot can appear very easy because of the climate. Only Devil Babylon Eyes is for now a Babylon Eyes which does very well on that part.
I keep checking the baggies in the fridge and nothing is happening, so it’s all vicarious through you folks for me!
I will be planting them all out regardless next week, probably. I should do count and estimate a row count and whatnot, but I’m a little afraid of the actual number of seeds…considering that the hybrids and OPs baggies are both quite hefty.
My own crosses were shockingly successful overall this season. I’ve gotten my hopes up on using Kordes ‘Nymphenburg’ as a pollen parent, having never had a seed of it germinate. Its outstanding fragrance, vigour, and fairly-decent health here on the BC Coast have made it a great favourite of mine.
I played with ‘Roller Coaster’ pollen too, and ‘George Burns’ as hip parent. Stripes are fun.
So I couldn’t stop myself and counted them up just now.
Oh. Em. Gee. That’s a lotta seeds of my own crosses.
But only 35 seeds per row (in the space I’m working with), so that’s where math comes in handy in adult life kids. Just saved myself from a panic-attack/breakdown with one simple division equation.
That RUSH right before I checked myself though! Oof. One more and then I gotta go.
