I’m beginning to get anxious – the weather is one month early, but it is also erratic, so everything is blooming way too fast and it is often wet. Oi vey.

That was here last week (the week of the fires), Michael. Now, it’s only 105 with 17% humidity and relentless sun. Today, few pollinations…

Thankfully, April Mooncrest germinates REALLY well and is flowering like a weed!

I’ve been putting Crepuscule pollen on all sorts of stuff from HT’s to floribundas to mini’s. The plant I have was rooted late last year and I’m guessing the hips would abort if I used it as a seed parent. I’m thinking that by holding off for another year using it for seed I’ll get much better growth. It does produce a ton of pollen.

I think even when it grows, Jeff, you may have better success with it as a pollen parent. In hotter climates, it doesn’t like to set seed well.

Kim,

I’m glad to see someone got some pollen out of Anda. I want to use it but I never see any pollen release when I dry them. I see a little on the petals though. Maybe I should just pick the petals laced with pollen and brush the petals on the seed parent. I will still try it again this year. Such a nice rose - especially when you have over 100 blooms on a single branch (104 to be exact).

Pollen release is hit and miss with many, Andre. If it’s too humid here, I find permitting the anthers to dry an extra day often results in significantly greater release. Some day, quite a few seem to have no release, then others, they release like a dust storm. The extra day or two seems to permit enough desiccation to permit the pollen to be knocked off the anthers. I’ve gotten to where I am not trying to grind many of them. If they release well, they get used. If not, they go back to drying for another 24 hours, maybe 48, then tried again. Once they stop releasing pollen, they get dumped. But, none of them are used after about two days from harvesting. If they take, great! If not, oh, well.

Pollinations had to be put on the back burner as unfortunately, my husband had a stroke in April. He is home now and we are coping.

I just went out to see how the pollinations I did early in April were coming along. Lost a lot, but some good ones are ripening up nicely. Nothing I pollinated with Pinnacle, took. So far nice fat hips on these:

Hi Judith, I am so sorry! I pray your husband recovers successfully and things can get back to the high-pitched crazy “normal” quickly. Your hips sound like some real fun ones. Good luck with them!

Judith,

So sorry to hear about your hsubands’ health problems. Good luck, and I hope you can adjust. Strokes do change things, and modern medicine does that branch of health really well. I just had my sister and her husband visiting for a week, and he is doing so well after having a stroke and heart attack simultaneously at the age of 54. He is now 72, takes his medicine, and just recouperated from another medical procedure, a hip replacement. Everyone in the small town he lives in knows him for his daily walks to the coffee shop, filling station and bait shop, and that is what he does all day-cannot drive, so he visits everyone on foot. Good luck and good health.

WHOA. Ebb Tide has huge 3" vivid purple blooms, and when opened, they had ALL of their pollen and normal female parts. MIRACLE. I have not seen this since buying it eons ago. And, so, Ebb Tide x Henry’s Blend was made :] And I can put Ebb Tide pollen on whatever I want, which has never doable before, since it never had any…

Are there any active volcanoes near you Michael? At this point, I think I would be watching for a violent eruption…

Thanks, Kim and Jackie. We’re going to do all we can to get him back to normal. Not being able to drive (let alone walk) would be just a horrendous situation for him, as he has always been an athlete (goes to the gym at 1am to avoid the crowds!).

Thanks for the support.

Well, it is the ring of fire, but Mt Hood is dead.

Judith I hope your husband recovers.

Dear Judith,

So sorry about your husband. I hope that he is able to regain most of his functioning.

That is great that you have rose breeding as an outlet - there is so much hope in this hobby.

God bless you both,

Hope is one of the major blessings of growing anything, much less breeding new plants. The promise shown in the jewel tone new foliage, hopes for even more glorious blooms. How can you raise anything without receiving that hope?

I’m continuing to pollinate April Mooncrest with things I hope will dwarf its climbing trait and (hopefully) accentuate the crested sepals. Today, was more with Dawn Crest, Tom Thumb and Marie Pavie.

Pollinations are winding down…I think I’ve crossed just about everything I wanted to.
