Comte de Chambord as mother?

80 days should be enough. You could wait another 10 days to be sure. It won’t be empty. I’d be really surprised if it was. Keep us updated!

Many thanks for sharing the current status. What pleasure ! That looks rich in opportunity. Looking forward to the further course.

Reads like valuable hip near harvest - l assume it protected from birds and four legged animals? Nice attractant color.

Thank you all for the encouragements!
@KarelBvn I will give it at least another week. If there is seed in there it probably won’t be many, so I want to give them every chance for optimum germination. However I’m going to have to travel for work at the end of the month and I will probably remove the hip before I leave, just in case any disasters happen while I’m away.
@RikuHelin Luckily up here on the roof I don’t have to worry about four-legged creatures, and the pigeon mafia that rules the skies in my city have never shown any interest in my rose hips. I mainly worry about our very strong winds snapping off the cane. I have staked that cane to hopefully prevent breakage.
@Roseus Thank you! I will update again soon when I harvest!
Best wishes to all of you for your hips and seeds this season.

Well, turns out I have to harvest tomorrow.
Major storm coming Sunday, gale-force winds expected through Monday. Winds are coming from the Northeast, the most exposed side of my garden, so I expect wide-scale devastation of all my plants (the same thing happened in early March this year).
I will try using a technique I read about on this forum, taking not just the hip but the stem below it as well, and treating it as a cutting, planted in moist soil and covered in a plastic bag, in a warm spot indoors by a window. Hopefully this will allow the hip to continue to ripen a little until I come back.
I’m relieved this is my last hip to harvest this year! All my other rose seeds are safely asleep in the fridge.

I would say that the seeds inside your hip are mature enough to harvest based on the color, and that if you really do want more ripening for some reason, it might work better to place your cutting in water than in soil in a bag.

@MidAtlas , thank you! Your comment was very useful, as I read it just before heading out to cut off the stem. I have placed the cutting in a glass of water. Be back in a few days, I will harvest the seeds then. Thanks again for your advice!

I gathered seeds from my ‘Comte de Chambord’ several years in a row, and there were always very few, if any, seeds in the hips. I sowed them, but none ever germinated.

Thank you for your feedback @paulbarden ! My expectations are definitely low, considering what you and Roseus have said. That said, I see on HMF that CdC/mme Boll as a seed parent did give Peter Beales’ Bliss, so that kind of gives me hope that perhaps it’s not 100% impossible.

Haha, only one seed, well, one and a half I guess.
Thank you everyone for keeping my expectations low!

You’re welcome . Still, last year I had only one seed from a cross with New Dawn as mother and it germinated and set flowers in its second month.

Sidenote: It isn’t the strongest. Lacks some vigor. Probably some root infection because it started off really well and was free of fungal disease but then stopped growing.

This is often a special game with special Portland roses. On my side, this year the totally rose hip development of ‘Comte de Chambord’ failed. ‘Rose de Resht’ had many empty seedpods, a lot of with one ore two seeds and only one hip with 17 nutlets. We have to take it easy, try again and keep on smiling!

可以的,但是要注意这个品种结果率不高保果也有点难,整体是可以作为母本的。但不能缺水。全日照打药。授粉三次。如果不在意抗病和香味,可以用奥斯汀的品种。应该更容易成功。

I tried with 8 different roses, but none were closely related. I’ll do an experiment with closely related ones like Austin roses like you suggest. Just to confirm. I always pollinate 2-4 times. Plenty of water also. I do not use spray of any kind.

Have you succeeded in using Comte de Chambord as a seedparent in the past?

I’ve managed to get some unripe fruit, but unfortunately last year in the 40 degree heat, the severe lack of water caused the fruit to wither, but there were seeds inside. About eight have been pollinated, containing more than ten seeds. Survive successfully for 2 months, water loss and wilt. So you can be a mother. If you don’t succeed there it could be the circumstances. Don’t be sad, can be a father. My red self - breeding as the mother hybrid it, the success rate is very high, there have been dozens of seedlings unearthed.

Just a belated information: The British standard work ‘The Encyclopedia of Roses’ of the Royal Horticultural Society is stating that ‘Comte de Chambord’ is descended from ‘Baronne Prévost’ X ‘Portland Rose’.Of course, I do not know if this information is reliable. However, according to morphological aspects it seems to me quite possible.

Update: that seed from last year’s hip never germinated.
This spring, I didn’t deadhead CdC and another OP hip has formed. It’s not swelling much. I hope there are actually seeds inside too and not just that one exogenous seed.

This year I’ve not pruned my Comte de Chambord. It is starting its third flush now. I’ve noticed 3 hips already turning orange, probably second or even first flush. Must be self pollinations. Maybe I’ll stratify them with my other crosses, simply to see if they actually grow into seedlings.

It’s typical, I do a bold statement on how badly this rose sets hips and the year after it proves me wrong. :grimacing:

It has been a really wet summer here, maybe this is needed for Comte de Chambord to decide to keep its hips.

I am glad to hear your good news! Comte de Chambord has not set a single rosehip this year. Surely it was just too hot for her in my region. Ispahan also kept only 4 of about 50 rose hips. These all contained achenes. I received a total of 29 and am curious to see if some of them will germinate again. You may remember the Ispahan seedling I showed here in the spring. It still exists. As absolutely expected, it has not flowered this year. Despite the heat, it has held up well so far, but it is barely 60 cm tall. I think an interesting miniature edition of Ispahan will develop here. Everything else remains to be seen. I will keep you posted on further developments. In any case, I keep my fingers crossed that Comte de Chambord will continue to surprise you positively.
