A few home run seedlings - first bloom

We could certainly use a clean red HT. They have gotten much better in recent years. ‘Veteran’s Honor’ seems to be the best of the recent batch?

Pride of England and In The Mood are far cleaner than Veterans’ Honor is here.

Incidentally, In The Mood is related to Home Run.

The picture on HMF sucks though so dont rely on it.

Oh that looks nice Jim. I have a special fondness for red roses that don’t fade.

What is the color really like in ‘Singin’ in the Rain’? There’s so much variation on helpmefind I can’t tell which is close to real, what is over exposed and what makes the coor appear stronger/brighter/browner then it actually does. I know there is some variation in color depending on climate in all roses, but looking through all the pictures there I have a hard time believing that the roses actually look in people’s gardens the way they do in the pictures.

Burnished copper over apricot.

Robert, though VH looks good here in the heat, in the spring we get lots of mildew on it. Incidentally, the seed parent of J76-3 was also the seed parent of I166.

Thanks Amber! SR does have variable color even on the same plant, and especially with the age of the blooms. Jadae has described the color perfectly.

Jim Sproul

Yes, no perfect red rose yet but perhaps things are looking up? I have to say I am not fond of the flat red color of ‘Olympiad’.

I went out to see my J76-3 ‘Home Run’ seedling growing outside. It seems to look as good outside as it did in the greenhouse. One problem though is that it does hold on to its petals rather long.

Jim Sproul

I’ve noticed too that the morden sunrise x home run seedlings keep their petals, even in fairly strong winds. Most of these also seem hold their color, so I’m not too concerned for now. The seedlings involving Cal Poly and Loving Touch seem to be more willing to drop them.

Jim, I really like this seedling of yours, hope that it continues to do well.

One of the reasons I quite using ‘Dortmund’ was the tendency for descendants to hang onto their petals too long.

I have this problem now with Dortmund x Lila Banks. The petals look really awful before they finally drop.

Since I now have a hybrid of Dortmund x Home Run it will be interesting to see if I get the same problem.

I’ve been dis-budding all new blossoms to encourage growth. I will report back as soon as I can in this regard.

I’ve noted Home Run tends to hang onto it’s petals a long time and it also makes empty hips that impede rebloom, it’s worst flaw in my opinion.

Nice spam =P

Anyhow… I will be putting Home Run on Cherry Meidiland soon. I dont know what else to use. My goal for it is floribunda since that is my favorite class of roses …and maybe some shrublets. Although I did get a climber seedling from Cherry Meidiland x Caribean (dont ask me what I was thinking…) last year, so maybe I can get climbers too. Maybe I should try it on Sympathie :stuck_out_tongue: Meh  Suggestions?

Cherry Meidiland x Caribean Jadae? What were you thinking?? lol

I did some similar crosses last year. Sometimes it’s fun to see what they turn out like. Sometimes it’s not too bad.

Home Run on Cherry Meidiland sounds like a great cross to me.

Lately I’ve been trying to envision or describe what I would like out of each cross. Of course it often doesn’t work out like we would hope.

I think it important to have a goal in mind.

I ordered a Country Dancer last fall and I’m almost sure what I got was a Pink Meidiland and I didn’t know what to do with it so I have been putting Home Run pollen on it. It should turn out seedlings something like Cherry Meidiland X Home Run. Next year will tell.

Patrick

I remember now what I was thinking, Robert. I remember having this beautiful bloom from Caribean x Sue Lawley 3 years ago, but scrapped Sue (disease producer in all ways), so I wanted to see what the new idea could produce. It has yet to bloom tho… it just keeps growing up lol.

Oh, goal: to use it aesthetically in floribundas. I dont care what color range. I thought Cherry Meidiland would be good because it is a tetrploid that blooms in Hmusk-like clusters. Plus the color is quite dominant, and I dislike the color of Home Run.

Jadae, do you prefer the color of Cherry Meidiland?

Yeah, I love the color. It’s dynamic and not flat like many reds.

I got some new pictures of my Dortmund x Home Run seedling today. It sure is red. The picture’s don’t show the sheen of the petals. They really shine.

Very nice Robert! I think that I can see the sheen in the 3rd photo, but I bet it is even better in real life. Photos just don’t do the real thing justice.

Jim Sproul

No, they really don’t do it justice. The stamens turned black today but I overhead water. The red with the green and the black look kind of Christmasy! lol

The blossom of Dortmund x Home Run shattered today.

I’m thrilled.

I was really worried this one would retain it’s petals too long.

Now I’ll watch to see if it forms a hip in this heat wave we’re having. It never scorched.
