1st germination of the season

Because that’s the only good thing about it

Whisky Mac syndrome, lol.

Every single Solitaire seedling that has popped up is miniature. This has never happened before. Usually Solitaire x mini = patio size or floribunda. The culprit pollen has to be Livin Easy x Baby Love, and Baby Love itself usually does not give very many true mini seedlings. I am wondering if the Silver Jubille and Southampton in Livin Easy is playing a part. Maybe that is why a lot of US and UK mini breeders use Southampton, Livin Easy, Easy Going, Hot Cocoa, etc. a lot. I know that both roses can have a tendency to dwarf full-sized roses that they are bred with. Maybe I’ll get lucky with something like Joycie without the blackspot =/ I really dont want minis lol :frowning: Maybe I need to be more careful with what I match F1’s of Baby Love with?

Is Baby Love (SCRivluv) definitely a true miniature?

Sort of. Its somewhere between patio and miniature. Its a 2.5’ ball of small, free-branching yellow sprays. Its foliage is like 20% larger than a true miniature. But, then again, Irresistable is a “true minature” and its 4’ tall x 3’ wide with sprays of miniature HT blooms that can span 12". Its thorns are larger than some HT’s lol.

I have germination of Metis OP seeds. It would be wonderful if there was repeat bloom among them. I’m sure they will be pink. If I’m lucky there will be repeat bloom from Therese Bugnet side and nitida foliage from R. nitida. Whatever shows up it will be likely diploid and will give me something to play with with the triploids I have. These Metis seeds are about 5 years old so I’m pleased to have some germination.

Today:

Toy Clown x (1-72-1 x L83)

Hoping for a miniature with improved health and hardiness. Climbing miniature is a possibility. Yellow or peach would be nice.

Abraham Darby x GIL-07-01

With this one I’m hoping for a striped Abraham Darby type bloom on a smaller plant.

It seems that many of my crosses decided to start germinating last week while I was out of town. Hundreds of seedlings have germinated and it will be a while before I catch up on potting them. These are some of the crosses that are germinating:

Many of these are repeats of crosses that have produced good seedlings in the past. I used R. roxburghii normalis for the first time last year and was surprised by how well it worked as a seed parent with diploid pollen. I’ve potted up 110 seedlings from R. roxburghii normalis X Mons. Tillier so far, and they are still germinating. I don’t expect them to bloom this year, so I’ll have to keep them until next year.

A few of the seedlings waiting to be potted:

Jim I think some one is going to be very busy over the next couple of weeks

That’s a lot of seedings! Some very interesting crosses too.

Yes, it is keeping me busy. I’d take a day or two off work to catch up, if they’d let me. Many crosses have already had >50% germination, so germinations should soon slow down.

First set to bloom this year. Remembrance x Double Red Knock Out. Its more than I had hoped for, complete with the KO foliage. Lets hope the foliage holds up so that its worthwhile to cross this onto something else :)The color in person is like Fragrant Cloud. Oddly enough, it smells moderate and sweet.

Remembrance x Easy Does It gave a lot of singles, but excellent color and foliage. All dwarf types. The seedling above is the only non-dwarf from Remembrance.

I like the color on that one Michael.

Not the first to germinate, but the first to flower is an OP seedling of Single Bliss. Remember that one? Late in fall I was going round checking for missed hips and took pity on these. They popped up in frig Mar 3 and now two are in bloom and have multiple buds too. About 4 cm high with 1 cm single flowers like their mommy and presumed daddy. Seem to be micro-minis. Probably no earthly use but interesting even so.

Next to bloom will be OP of presumed Home Run, gathered early Oct and stratified cold until Mar 3 when they were popping up also.

Not long after will be some OP seeds of a pink single bedding rose at an apartment complex, as yet to be identified. Very fertile, 2 ft high, gets blackspot but blooms till frost. I stored the hips cold until end of Dec, shelled and put in moist peat. Some were given different periods of warm stratification, some cold. Well the warm was too long on a couple bags (around 6 wk) and a bunch sprouted (a few % of total). So I wonder if the cold treatment may be satisfied while still in the hip for some fraction. Sure not what I thought was the case. I’ll write up the whole story next fall when I have all the comparative results and may have the rose ID.
