This is one of several wichurana seedlings that look promising, but so far it is the only one that looks like it has potential as a thornless, fairly deep yellow, slow to fade (should be better when the weather is cooler),nice bloom size, so far a nice looking leaf and branching structure, and so far no rust, spot or mildew issues. But it is young, and I notice the wiches can both grow out of or develop spot issues later on, like in the second yr. Maybe significant is the fact that a Lady Of the Mist cross was the seed parent. LOTM has not produced a lot of seedlings that I have kept, but the ones I have kept have great health, good rebloom, and wonderful color. The downside has been the unbelievable amount of thorns/bristles that they have. Definitely a Godzilla of thorns. My LOTM X Prairie Peace is only approachable with a machete.( But it has shown some rebloom and great fragrance.) This {(LOTM x Betty Boop) X (Dorola x Rosa wichurana)} = 25% wich is undoubtedly that cross, which I hesitated in making knowing LOTM’s penchant for passing on thorns. But I was interested in seeing if the size and color might be there. I was a bit afraid to even think about what the tentacles from hell would look like but without bristles it is a nice little shrub and knowing that also can change with growth still makes it a really cute little plant.
Jackie, it is beautiful, along with being yellow.
Congrats, Jackie! Looks very nice and thornless to boot.
Congratulations, Jackie! She’s a stunner!
Thanks, I like this one also. All the others have had fading issues or a combo with tentacles from hell issues. I have another thornless that is naturalizing down the canyon.
Yes, it is looking very good and the foliage nicely compliments the flower, please keep us updated on its progress.
It’s very pretty. You should try crossing it with the nonfading Shockwave floribunda to try to create more diversity. I’ve used Shockwave a lot. It sets seeds easily and they are viable.
Shockwave is a great yellow floribunda. I have used it in a number of crosses and the only negative I come up with is the thorniness-both big and small ones-of the lower branches. I think if I checked I probably have a few that are almost bristle free also. But most of the offspring seem to come up with a very nice overall shrub shape. The offspring do get some blackspot and a few other assorted spots. My wichuranas all seem to be blackspot free. I have always used Shockwave as pollen since I do not have the shrub myself.
About Shockwave- here all the OP seedlings (maybe 100 ) all died a quick death of BS. Interesting that it is fertile when pollinated bcs most yrs very few OP hips form. Shockwave has great color but is itself vulnerable to BS in my yard though it does fine out along a highway.
I do love that yellow Jackie. I should send you my New Dawn x yellow mini to work with. It is low on thorns, pale yellow, free of BS here, sets hips very well, reblooms if kept watered and given some light. Gets to a couple ft tall with 2 inch or so semi double flowers in clusters of 2-3.

Any photo’s of it Larry, if possible, please, I just love yellow roses.
Very nice! I hope it turns out to be a 1-in-a-whole-bunch for you.
If the thorns come in and make you mad, I bet I’d be one of many to still want to still go forward with it.
The world needs better yellows.
Larry, PM me about your New Dawn x yellow mini. I have a number of nice yellow that I am pursuing and the end goal is a somewhat to very hardy, healthy and low thorned to thornfree yellow with a slow fade and descent shape. That is a little open to interpretation–now I have a couple of nice, quite healthy big (not huge) deep yellows that are slow fading, fade to lemon mostly, not white, and are not thorn free. Dorola has been a source of deep unfading yellow. My Dorola (R.I.P.- eaten by the gophers) had very sharp thin thorns and quite a lot of them-HMF lists it as low thorned-not this one. Anything to continue on this path is what I am looking for. If this is healthy and fertile, I will make some crosses with a couple specimens that contain Midas Touch (another source of deep non fading yellow-terrible flower shape) Madame Bravey, and R.altaica.
Sorry David, If had a photo it got away from me. I will get one in the next week or so for the 2nd bloom cycle when the plant carries lots of hips. I noticed it has no BS while another couple roses on either side have considerable. They also are relatively resistant compared to Shockwave seedlings, Julia Child and older HTs.
Jackie, i’ll contact you when I get back from my travels
Jackie, did you get the PM I sent the other night?
I got a pic of a couple ND x Ymin in bloom the other day. We are experiencing a Japanese beetle attack that’s getting annoying this year. First seen 2 yr ago, more last yr, a lot this yr. So the flowers are nibbled at, as happens with light colors. Photos in camera, need to get into computer. More pink than in spring, a lot like Little Darling, as I recall it from 2 decades ago.
Larry, Check your PM inbox. It must be a good yr for Japanese beetles. Now the big green fig beetles are starting. They love peaches, figs and will devour roses for dessert .
