Yellow China

Yes sir, unfortunately, history is full of such examples. More recently, we’ve had some resembling but not identical to them. Remember when J&P introduced their “New Generation Roses”, the own root plants? They hyped they would be offering Henry Fonda own root…until they had to walk it back as Henry didn’t grow well own root.

I had a very beautiful hybrid tea called Fragrant Keepsake, yb, 2005, Zary. Its parentage is listed as French Perfume X Sunbright, Jackson & Perkins 2004. It had beautiful ruffled yellow-pink flowers, and grew quite strongly to 3 ft. tall. In the middle of the summer it dropped its leaves from black spot, then regrew again to bloom in the fall. I tried straightening Fragrant Keepsake out by spraying with Immunox Spectracide, but it did not produce long lasting satisfactory results. After about 3 years I got rid of it. I had used Fragrant Keepsake crossed with other roses and the new varieties had some leaf drop in the midsummer also. Is this an example of genetically induced leaf drop here in the Willamette Valley, Zone 7?

I’ve had two other roses that had early spring defoliation on different years, seemed like once every 10 years. It doesn’t always happen. I haven’t sprayed the last couple years.

Does anyone else have experience with Fragrant Keepsake? I wonder how its sales are doing now, as it has exceptional flowers.
