Which English Rose?

Jadae

You could consider White Cockade a New Dawn seedling with nice flower quality and strong petals. A smaller climber. A parent of Compassion the best actual climber.

Robert,

Have you’ve tried Aloha, another seedling of Aloha? I have it, but I haven’t used it… Usually, what happens is that I make the cross, but then it gets lost in the many OP hips. I made a cross of Aloha X (Abe Darby X Basye’s Amphi) and I had lost the hip. One after the year past and I had stripped the plant of its leaves that I saw a shrviled and dried hip with the tag on it still.

I have always imagined re-crossing seedlings of New Dawn could make wonderful shruby climbers. I think a cross of Aloha X Armada could make a good rose.

I’m in contact with a deaf Japanese woman in San Jose. We communicate through ASL and by writting things down. She grows “Fresh Snow” in her home in Japan, and it’s a decendant of New Dawn. This is the only full sized rose she has grown, besides Queen Elizabeth, and she tells me that she crosses it with grocery store miniature roses. She’s told me that Fresh Snow has made many beautiful seedlings with hybrid tea like flowers with smaller miniature leaves.

I know nothing of “Fresh Snow” other than that it’s a Japanese rose, but now I’m interested in obtaining it just because I haven’t heard of it until maybe a few days ago.

I tried Aloha early on and found it more difficult than some to work with. I’ve opted to use Abraham Darby instead but I wouldn’t expect outstanding disease resistance.

To tell the truth I’m trying to get away from doing mainstream crosses. It seems to make any real progress we have to bring in new species.

I already have descendants of New Dawn through my Armada x Lila Banks crosses.

So far this is this seems the best of the lot.

It’s partially smooth and works both for pollen and seed.

It’s 1/4 New Dawn.

In which way did you find Aloha difficult?

Was it removing the pollen?

Because I had that problem too… My favorite rose that’s very easy to remove the pollen is Pacific Serenade. Barely takes a second to get it ready. Aloha, on the other hand, took me time to prep up.

Yes, removing the pollen was bothersome and Aloha didn’t set hips as well as I liked. It was somewhat particular as I recall.

At any rate Abe Darby is easier in my opinion and to be honest I got pulled in other directions before I had a chance to explore Aloha better.

A white version of Aloha but with more scent is exactly what I would want.

Robert, are you the only one who uses The Monster?

“The Monster” is dead.

“Old Lady Gates” is very alive however. I hope it blooms come Spring.

"“The Monster” is dead. "

You could totally tell a story for this by the naming of it’s descendants, lol.

Thats ashame, may it rest in peace.

Well, about the englisch roses. Last year I used the Perdita and it’s a great seedparent. It’s not yellow but the hips where huge and full of seeds. This year the bush didn’t well cause the little amouth of sunlight. The flowers are wonderfull and the fragrance is very nice.

Is Perdita used a lot by the people here?
