OK this is just not fair… I am in the middle of a snow storm and you all are posting your first crosses of the season…
Liz, snowing here also, we need to move … oh, well, today I’ll transplant some nice looking seedlings which hopefully hold promise ![]()

I have made a few crosses inside. Basically to study how crosses take in the house and how long pollen is viable for when stored. Most of these crosses are not real prize crosses. Basically because the stored pollen was just what I had. But here is a list of what has taken. This is just the beginning of the study. I plan on repeating it next year with better discipline because I was whilly nilly with it. And then writing it up for the journal. But for note the pollen of Ann Endt, R. woodsii (which both failed) and R. foliosa is one year old. The pollen of cornelia and Lovely Lydia was fresh. The pollen of Angel face, Tiffany and Red Masterpiece was from spring of 2009 making it 2 years old.
Next year when I do the experiment right I will have pollen stored from 2009 to the present. Also will just probably do 2 parents and do a lot of bulk crosses with the two parents to get more valuable data.
So this is what took.
Cornelia (not the best choice to work with in the house)x Angel Face
Gala x Lovely Lydia
Gala x Angel Face
Sequia Gold x Angel Face
Sequia Gold x R. foliosa
Sequia Gold x Tiffany
Sequia Gold x Red Masterpiece
Hot Tamale x Cornelia
Hot Tamale x Tiffany
Adam,
If you like your Hot Tamale, check out Cinnamon Girl.
Joan, I am unsure of what my first cross will be. That is like 2.25 months away! Easy Does It might bloom first, but who knows. I dont even have any ideas for it. I’m still waiting for the ones germinating to bloom, lol.
I’m still looking at leafless sticks here in Oregon, but I plan on using Honey Perfume with some crested varieties. I still looking for that yellow crested floribunda.
Jeff
As soon as I get some blooms I will be crossing my head off…LOL. Another month or so I hope. My roses are just starting to leaf out and we are expecting light snow showers on Sunday…grrr!
Jeff,
Have you thought of using Goldmarie? It has several doses of caninae types in it, which is my guess as to where cresting originates.
Adam must be desperate to get started if he’s making crosses using Angel Farce!
(teasing)
Paul it certainly doesn’t lead to good plants. My main goal is testing the method I use to store pollen.
I checked some of the first blooms to open and found more than a few freaks. Maybe the cold nights we’ve been having? More vegetative centers than usual, a couple with no female parts, and then another with no male parts. (About Face-1st 3 blooms all vegetative) Cool nights being relative here—
Adam-great goal, testing pollen storing, and even after 2 yrs The Angel Face is still fertile? or so it appears? How was it stored?
Sorry I stepped on toes of those who are still dealing with snow. I will be envious of you in July, August and September when my roses are suffering through their summer dormancy.
The pollen of Tiffany and Angel Face is definitely fertile after 2 years. I wish I had the same variety of pollen in multiple years. When I do this experiment next yer I have got to do it with fresh pollen of varieties that will work better.
But as far as storage. they are stored in little bead jars that come in a tray. each bead jar has one pollen type. after screwing on the lid the seem is wrapped in medical tape. I number the bead jars on top with a blue crayon and since the tray is see through it makes an easy reference without opening it up. These numbers coraspond to a note book I have. There is one bead jar missing in the tray so I can put the silicon packets in to catch any stray moisture. the tray is then sealed around the seam also with medical tape. and then the whole tray is put in a gallon ziplock bag, which it barely fits. when I take it out of the freezer the moisture is let to condense on the outer ziplock bag before I open it up. very little of it is found on the inner layers. I contained a link below of a similar bead tray. I believe I got mine from target or walmart.
Jadae so is Cinnamon Girl similar to Hot Tamale. I am beginning to really like Hot Tamale because it set seed well, is vigorous, blooms very well and it seems to be healthier than most miniatures. These things are important to me. I have very little experience as of yet on what the seedlings will be like because this is the first year I got seedlings coming up from it but I am hopeful.

Thanks for your detailed way of storing pollen! I should try it.
Cinnamon Girl is bred from Hot Tamale. The form, size and architecture are nearly identical. The only major difference is the CG has slightly more vigor and is of a very, very unusual bicolor. Coffee Bean is not too different, as well, but it is not directly related. CG is mildew resistant next to where both Giggles and Soroptimist International will both mildew (Walla Walla, WA).

Oh no problem, and it is true that there is not a place that does not have its’ dilemma’s in growing roses…that’s for sure!
I wasnt offended lol. If I was then the world would know
It actually provoked me to try to even fathom what would even bloom first now that I have a different locale to work with.
oh I was looking for sympathy… we went from no snow on the ground to somewhere between 10 and 12 inches!!!
As for what I hope to cross, here is a short list:
Prairie Celebration x Midnight Blue
P. Celebrations x Julia Child
I realize that many people have been able to use both of these pollen parents as seed parents, but after 3 years and no germinations I am giving up. P. Celebration seems to be a great seed parent.
Pretty Lady x Julia Child
P. Lady x Paintbrush
I’m also putting P Celebration pollen on Gemini, Everest Double Fragrance, Prairie Harvest, and B16 (Loving Touch x Baby Love)
That is my must do list. I have a longer list of things to try, but that can wait for when I actually have flowers to play with…

I think Julia Child needs a longer period of stratification. I let hips overwinter (inadvertently) on Julia Child last winter & finally picked and processed the hips in May. I got two germinations in January, one of which is a keeper. It’s this yellow rose curse. I have absolutely no germinations from Rugelda ops & Apricot Beauty crosses & ops. I’ll be throwing those seeds in a pot & putting them outdoors. Snow be dammed.
Ask me in June, but no doubt i’ll concentrate on last years most vigorous seedlings.
Meanwhile last years hips are still in the fridge.
When the time is right—.
