What are the roses in Ralph Moore's Crown Jewel Series?

Are all of Ralph Moore’s roses with ‘Jewel’ in the name part of his Crown Jewel Series?

I never heard any of them refer to them as “Crown Jewels”, but it would make sense if that was their marketing idea. “Jewel”, “Darling”, “Gem”, “Angel”, “Princess” and “Ribbon” were recurring themes.

I never heard of a Crown Jewel series either until I saw this:

“This rose is one from Ralph Moore’s Crown Jewel Series bred from R. bracteata and registered as a Hybrid Bracteata.”

I tried looking “behind the scenes” to determine who entered that so I could ask where they got the information, but couldn’t find anything.

in 2003, Sequoia Nursery listed five roses in the printed catalog under the title “Crown Jewel Series”, and in brackets (Bred from the species Rosa bracteata). These five appear on page three of the 2003 catalog.

The five are: Amber Gem, Lemon Pearls, Tangerine Jewel, Star Dust and Precious Dream. If I am not mistaken, all five are Out of Yesteryear hybrids.

Grouping these five bracteata hybrids together as the “Crown Jewel” set was simply Ralph’s idea of a marketing tool, although I doubt any of these will be remembered as being one of this somewhat arbitrary set.

Thanks Paul! I hoped you would see this as I figured you would know. They never talked about it when I was visiting.

Thanks for that, Paul.
