I opened two of the three hips from Wasagaming (I am leaving one to ripen a bit more.) As I have never had seed from it before I decided to do a float test. Ten or so seeds all floated, but then one sunk (only to float later). All the rest of the seeds, about fifty, floated. I will find out soon if that is the case with the third hip also.
So, my questions:
-Have any of you who got seed from Wasagaming to germinate done a float test on the seeds before stratification?
-was warm storage necessary before cold strat?
-do you know (approximately) what germination percentage was?
I’m just trying to get a general idea of what to expect. I have only had one Rugosa hybrid where the seeds floated and then germinated, so certainly not the norm, but was hoping Wasagaming fits in this category.
Two pollen parents were on Wasagaming that took: a seedling I have that is from Martin Frobisher and Agnes.
Thanks for any input you can give.

Rugosa seeds normally float. Personal experience and: Canadian Science Publishing
I did not apply the float test to my rugosa hybrids. I do not remember any extensive studies regarding the float behavior of first generation (or higher) hybrids.
A drop or two of dish soap in the water may cause more to sink so you can get a better idea of potential viability.
You could also consider hacking a few open with a fingernail clipper to see if the embryo inside is withered or plump.
Thanks for the responses: very interesting article. I may cut a few open next week when I get time, or in a few weeks when the snow socks us in.

I think I got 10-20% germination from Wasagaming. Didn’t do the float test. I did room temperature dry storage (in an envelope) before cold strat. Didn’t keep any of its seedlings- they lacked vigour and were full of powdery mildew.
Thanks for that, I’ll be glad to get that kind of germ rate. I have them at room temp now. I’ll put them in the fridge in a bit.

Yes Henry l believe, every TB OP seed floated when placed in “plain” water and even after dosing with hand soap or a dropping with near terminal velocity into test water cup.
Good thing l read your reply or would of chucked them. Only HR I will try.
