Veloroutes

Veloroutes.org is a fun web site I ran across this morning. You can determine your elevation; latitude and longitude (as with a couple of other sites), the grade of a slope between two addresses and a number of other fun things for pretty much any location in the world.

I knew it was a steep slope between the street and the bottom of this hill. According to the website, the downhill neighbor is 228’ away; there is a 56’ change in elevation between us; the grade of the slope between us is 24.4% and my elevation is 980’ above sea level. All it took was the address of the downhill neighbor and my address. It’s a neat sight. I thought you might have fun playing with it and it could help explain why some things work as they do for each of us.

Kim,

Thanks for that. And how about a photoperiod calculator

Many plants are sensitive to photoperiod for various aspects of their development. The strawberry Fragaria vesca, for example, initiates flower buds during the short days of autumn, then produces runners during the long days of summer. Scroll down to Fig.5 to see the calendar for this species.

Kim, I have always wanted to know this! Most people do not appreciate what I attempt to describe when I describe gardening on a hill. My nearest neighbor at the foot of the hill is 354 ft away, with an elevation change of 104’. That is a 30.5% grade-I feel it every time I go down to get the mail. Any wonder that trick 'n treaters have never trecked up this drive in the 28 yrs that someone has lived at this house? Fun stuff to fill the dog days of summer.

I completely understand Jackie! With a 24.4% grade, (and your 30.5!) is there any question WHY things aren’t mulched? Too far, too steep, too hot, too slippery, too lazy and TOO OLD! LOL (me, at least! LOL!)

Get a motorcycle, a trail type. Two little steps into the house is all I like. About two times a year I go upstars to look for something.
