Two kinds of Fairy Roses

Kim, I think the tiniest seedling I’ve ever observed was, ‘Nessie’ x ‘Petite Perle D’or’. I just knew it was going to die, but it didn’t.

Now the thing is a horse. I wish it would flower.

Kim, ‘Cineraire’ reminds me of ‘Brittania’. Interesting there’s so little information about it.

Here’s a link to Nessie x Petite Perle D’or

Yes, it would be wonderful if Nessie X PPD would flower. I wish the rodents hadn’t taken all of the seed tags when Nessie germinated. From observation and remembering the fixation I had on Mlle. Cecile Brunner at the time (still do, but not to that extent), I feel quite sure Nessie resulted from Montecito X Mlle. Cecile Brunner. There are too many characteristics between them for it not to be the case.

What do you think would come from crossing (IF it ever blooms)Nessie X PPD with Yellow Jewel X Twilight Mist? They’d probably range from gigantic to subliminal! LOL! I’d think, based on how clean both are in more desert climates, it should be pretty good many places. The more overly vigorous ones could possibly be tamed with Candleflame. 'Candleflame' rose lineage There is just too much behind that rose NOT to make use of. (listening Paul? hehehe)

Another of Ralph’s roses which I am sure holds something wonderful in it is Firefall. 'Firefall' Rose

No descendants, unfortunately, and when I had it, I wasn’t doing much pimping. But, imagine what might be done with Dortmund and Little Chief together!

Kim,

I got ‘Firefall’ from you several years ago, and I am sorry to report that it is one of those rare roses that drops 90% of its foliage by the time it reaches bloom peak and then remains half naked the rest of the season. It is not disease that does this because it does it even when the plant is sprayed regularly. I considered it as a parent but ultimately decided not to use it for that reason. To some degree I have seen ‘Little Chief’ do this as well; its a trait I want to avoid in breeding.

It all comes down to selecting parents that perform well in your location/climate, and avoiding the ones that do not.

I am considering using ‘Red Moss Rambler’ again, after discounting it years ago as something I no longer had an interest in. Some of these things resurface in our work from time to time as we begin to see them in a different light. One seedling that was regarded as junk one year might be the hot potato to chase in three or four years time. (pardon that dreadful metaphor!)

Kim, Yellow Jewel X Twilight Mist was one of the few roses I finally gave up on.

I couldn’t get fertility out of it and, I DID TRY.

I wish anyone else with luck with it, but even I will only beat my head against the wall so many times, before I finally throw in the towel.

Sadly, I no longer have it here. I did enjoy it.

Robert, I haven’t put my Lilac Charm X Purple Heart seedling on HelpMeFind. I’ve uploaded a photo of one of its opening blooms here:

Nice Jim. Fragrant?

‘Purple Heart’ was a poor doer in the heat but ‘Lilac Charm’ and ‘International Herald Tribune’ are both great here.

Yes, it is very fragrant.

Jim, your Lilac Charm seedling appears as blue as Calgene’s Applause. Very pretty!

This is my favourite ‘Angel Wings’ seedling so far… just about to flower. 4.5" high so far. It’s the only one that’s branching already.

Each of the buds has the little fringed sepals that all of my China seedlings from Viru have.
