Trier

Would anyone like to share their experiences with Trier as seed or pollen parent?

At what stage do its seedlings typically start blooming? At the early seedling stage? sometime within the first year? or when it gets some girth?

I have a great respect for this rose. Despite a deep freeze in late spring in zone 5 last year which destroyed fruit set in fruit trees, and which caused cane damage to what I thought were hardy roses, this rose had no cane damage whatsoever.

This is the second-blooming of an OP seedling of ‘Trier’, which germinated (along with a half dozen others) in mid-winter 2025, so has been living with my orchids under lights. None of the seed that I germinated last year showed juvenile-bloom and so all were discarded, but it seems like it is possible.
As a bonus, this flower also has a sweet and spicy fragrance.

It’s tempting to assume that seedlings that do not flower in their first year are not going to be repeaters, but I have found this is not always true, especially when dealing with varieties like Hybrid Musks and Polyanthas. Many seedlings will start to flower in season 2 and be remontant after that.
My own hybrid ‘Mel’s Heritage’ did not bloom in its first year, but it did grow like a weed, which is the only reason I kept it. It turned out to be one of the most generous repeat blooming climbers I have ever grown. So be careful what you discard in year one.

Heard and understood, sir! This is the only unbloomed plant I kept from last season’s germinations; it’s a ‘François Juranville’ OP seedling that was completely spotless all year, with good hardiness (after an admittedly-middling “winter”). I hope it flowers this year, and that they’re nice flowers.

Poop. That’s the wrong photo.
Here is the rambler:

Rather strong upright growth for a wich-derived rambler; maybe it climbs? However, its health and vigour were/are outstanding thus far.

The other picture is of a ‘Mutabilis’ seedling I kept; not my favourite, but certainly the strongest. The taproot it sent down was amazing!

Given its pedigree, I suspect there’s about a 50/50 chance it will be a repeat bloomer. Good luck! I hope you get to see it this year.

First bud initiated outside, on the precocious-blooming OPTrier-seedling that germinated early and bloomed twice inside under lights. Curious to see if the flowers made outside are any different/better…

I selfed the last bloom (indoors, in late March?) to see if a hip would form; so far, it’s still green.

First picture is the bloom indoors under lights this winter, second through fourth of a flower initiated and bloomed outside under natural light. MUCH nicer colour! Petal-count went down…but the sweet scent remains.
(@RikuHelin the “Electron-pink” has RETURNED!!)
Dusty.

EDIT: By the next morning, the petals were nearly the same light pink as the indoor-bloom.
That gave me sad-face.
Ah well! Easy come, easy go…

OP ‘Trier’ seedling. Slightly more than single, solid colour, clustered, reasonably healthy. Would these dwarf-repeaters be considered “polyanthas”, then?
