"Thornless moss"

Ralph Moore and I used to joke and laugh about creating a thornless moss rose. His mosses seemed to get more extremely prickled each generation. It has taken quite a few years, but by crossing Lynnie X Kim Rupert, it appears I’ve come pretty close to our “joke”. I know it’s a cross due to the striped flowers and mossy sepals, but there are very few prickles on the stems. I know it could have a lot more mossing, but this is definitely a start! This is a week old flower which has received a half an inch of rain. Not bad lasting power.

Congrats on moving to a place that gets rain!

Thank you! It was rather nice, but that was one of the stipulations and conditions for the selected landing place.

this is an excellent ‘start’ Kim. Very nice one.

Thank you!

What scent has this moss?

I haven’t been able to smell much since moving. It’s cooler, damper and windier and I am within walking distance of fields of produce, so I get the “scents” from the organic growers on the edge of town which masks most of what’s left after my allergies to the dust, etc. I’ll try it again tomorrow when the sun’s out to see what I might detect.

Theoretically it is possible.
Start from a thornless and glandular rose.

Congratulations Kim! Looks good - like the foliage, missing and striped bloom too!

Thanks, Jim. I’m trying it for breeding now. Any idea how easily the mossing comes through with L56?
