This season's progress with tetraploid (acicularis X OP) .

(The following of last winters crosses that involve the tetraploid (acicularis X OP) have grown at least one foot in height this summer (I consider that these are mature enough to survive the winter):

((Delicata X OP) X ((Therese Bugnet X OP) X OP)) X (acicularis X OP). Seven plants.

(acicularis X OP) X R-15. Four plants.

(Calocarpa X nutkana) X (acicularis X OP). Four plants.

(Calocarpa X nutkana) X (mixed pollen of Agnes + acicularis X OP). Six plants.

(Hansa X OP) X (acicularis X OP). One plant.

(acicularis X OP) X (Hansa X OP). Eight plants.

The following seedlings are alive but have grown less than one foot (these may not survive the winter - I have sprayed them with gibberellic acid to give them a boost):

((Delicata X OP) X ((Therese Bugnet X OP) X OP)) X (acicularis X OP). Two plants.

(acicularis X OP) X R-15. Four plants.

(Calocarpa X nutkana) X (acicularis X OP). Five plants.

(Calocarpa X nutkana) X (mixed pollen of Agnes + acicularis X OP). Five plants.

(Corylus X OP)(acicularis X OP). Two plants.

(Hansa X OP) X (acicularis X OP). Two plants.

(acicularis X OP) X (Hansa X OP). Two plants.

One of the 2004 (acicularis X OP) X R-15 seedlings mentioned above has flowered and it does have a yellow flower.

The link below gives a picture of the acicularis X R-15 seedling.

I sent a number of these seeds to others. Have any of the other seeds germinated and flowered? My four other acicularis X R-15 plants have not yet flowered.

Since this cross worked, I will have to try acicularis X (Rugelda X R-15).

As you can see from the picture, I have already pollinated one bloom with Carefree Sunshine pollen. Last year several first year open pollinated Carefree Sunshine seedlings had nice yellow blooms. Unfortunately at least 2 did not survive the winter. I am hoping that acicularis X R-15 crossed with Carefree Sunshine would give some nice winter hardy yellows.

This is my October 2006 update.

“Possible tetraploid” acicularis used as the mother:

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

2004 R-15 as pollen parent.

There are 6 surviving plants. Only the one mentioned earlier in this thread has flowered. The pollination attempt with Carefree Sunshine failed. Also, no open pollinated hips were produced. I assume that I tried using the (acicularis X R-15) pollen on other plants, but I did not find any successful hips. When this plant bloomed, there was quite a wet spell, this may be the reason for the lack of hip set both as mother as as father.

2004 (Hansa X OP) as pollen parent.

There are 10 surviving plants. 2 flowered.

One flowered in early June and had pink, semi-double flowers. No opened pollinated hips were found.

The second formed three hips, but no information is available concerning the characteristics of the flowers.

“Possible tetraploid” acicularis used as the father (pollen supplier):

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

2004 (Calocarpa X Nutkana) as mother.

There are 6 surviving plants. One flowered. It formed purple, single blooms in early June. Twenty open pollinated hips were collected.

There are also 10 surviving plants when the pollen was a mixture of Agnes pollen and acicularis pollen. Only one flowered. It formed large, pink, semi-double blooms in late May. No open pollinated hips were found.

2004 (Illusion X John Davis) as mother.

There is only 1 plant. It flowered and formed 4 open pollinated hips. Unfortunately, the characteristics of the flowers were not recorded.

2004 (Corylus X OP) as mother.

There are 4 surviving plants. None of them have flowered.

2004 ((Delicata X OP) X ((Therese Bugnet X OP) X OP)) as mother.

There are 10 surviving plants. Three have flowered.

One flowered in early June with pink, semi-double flowers. It formed 7 open pollinated hips.

The second plant also flowered in June. It had small, pink, single blooms. 13 open pollinated hips ere collected.

The third plant flowered in June and formed 3 open pollinated hips. The characteristics of the flower were not recorded.

2004 (Hansa X OP) as mother.

There are 2 surviving plants. one flowered. It formed pink flowers in early June. Unfortunately, other flower characteristics were not recorded. 1 open pollinated hip was collected.
