Note to self: DO NOT (ever again) put unopened hips on the dining table on top of post-it notes saying what cross was in the hip. The cat thinks they are toys to be knocked off the table (and off the corresponding note) and batted around the floor. DUH!
I guess I’ll just have to see what germinates and then decide if it resembles Unconditional Love or Phyllis Shackleford, or maybe Iced Tea or Puanani.
Kathy,
I had a friend who had his seed trays in the garage on shelving, and put the cat in there one day when he was a tad on the naughty side in the house. He thought the seed trays made good litter boxes and did a number on seeds and labels. The result - He had ‘seedling’ x ‘seedling’ plants that year. Lesson learned!
Kathy… I’ve got a cold bed/hotbed outside for my seed bed with a hinged top . Some days i have to open it up to vent the heat…and like u say “THAT DANG CAT” has to do it’s thing…
Carolyn showed a marvelous photo of Ralph and his favorite cat, Carla (remember the rose?). Ralph would walk through the seedling house, Carla followed him on the roof, remaining just over him as he walked. She wasn’t allowed in the houses for just that reason. In this particular photo, he studied the seedlings while she sat watching him through the plastic.
Now that’s a cute kitty story, Kim!
Kathy,
It doesn’t work if you put them in a protective box on a paper grid identifying the crosses, either. Then there are not only the hips to bat around, there’s the box to sit in. Plus the hips are just the perfect size to carry out of the box so you can slap them around on a hard surface and make them really GO!
Yup I can relate… One of mine climbs my fig tree when it is indoors to pick a leaf. She then carries the leaf around the house to play with it. I have fig leaves on all 3 levels…
My kitty hasn’t tried to use seed trays as a litter box, but instead, likes to bat the small seedlings from side to side until they get uprooted. The roses must get hooked in her claw and she later abandons them next to their little containers. They must not be fun to play with once they’ve been uprooted. She’s done this at least three times (twice with the same white little mini I had). I thought I saved the little mini seedling last time, but this time I think kitty has finished the job.
