Suddenly striped rose

I have a two yr old seedling that with its’ last flower is suddenly flaunting stripes. It is a somewhat silvery pink and the stripes are white, so I thought the sun was playing games (or something). Tonight I checked a newly opened flower on the opposite side of the bush, different branch, and it is striped. Two more buds are showing stripes, and one is not. Is it possible to have most of a bush show some sort of a sporting effect in more than one branch? White on pink isn’t terribly showy, but it is an interesting development. It is not due to chemical sprays and I have not fertilized lately.

May be water caused.

I have a repeat blooming azelea that has both solid pink and striped flowers on the plant on different branches. I’m not sure why and can’t answer your question but I’m glad it does have both.

Hi Jackie,

What’s the parentage?

Sports typically happen in one branch. It would be extremely unusual to have 2 random events happen on opposite sides of the bush. Is there a branch that both striped blooms have in common?

I had a striped once that turned all light yellow in the Fall and the rest of the year it was striped so I suspect it had something to do with the weather,(temp. maybe)

I am aware of the azaleas which I believe sports back and forth quite easily-somewhat like the York and Lancaster rose, I believe. Now that I think of it, I used to have a Pink Iceberg that did that, with many half’n halfs in the spring especially. I called it my Harliquin rose. When I took another look at the striped seedling tonight, it is quite a different pink, sports ruffled petals, and is definately striped. If it produces a better flush soon I’ll try to post a photo. Purely a fun curiosity.

The parentage is Moondance X B.Streisand. I kept it because it survived the Downy Mildew attack that got so many of my seedlings, and it was right in the middle of the worst table. The color is pleasant, but its’ fragrance is remarkable. Overall, it is quite disease and heat resistant. What I noticed is that two branches from the base are bearing stripes-one had one flower and the other had three. The flowers on the center most branch is the regular unstriped, unruffled pink-quite like Queen Elizabeth. Now that I want to ensure a good fall bloom on it I will throw some organic fert.on it-haven’t fertilized all summer, but want to let them rest a little through August.

Heat can affect both Iceberg and New Zealand to color break, which is probably what the striping is from – two lines of unstable colors sporting.

I am certainly aware of Icebergs many aliases, along with color ‘imperfections’, but other than Full Sail, what are some of the other New Zealand sports? And the heat factor is definately at play here.

I was thinking unusual stripe effect, but it is probably a heat induced instability, esp., with Iceberg as grandparent. Overall Iceberg seems very unstable.

Most roses close to both polyanthas and Pernetianas often are.

I have used Iceberg a few times in a breeding programme and didn’t like the results, so I don’t use it anymore. The only offspring which I kept was Disco Lemonade which is a (Iceberg X Mme C Testou), semi double /double and has a strong scent of carnations. Grows to around 2 1/2 ft high and very healthy.
