Can anyone comment on this rose. I found only one mention, by David Z, regarding the idea of including it in Earthkind trials.
I bought one today for $6.99 at a garden place in western PA that grows annuals and had a few roses around. The owner said it wintered over it its pot. Shows no damage despite cold to maybe 0 F, snow, then rain for 2 months, with no spray.
The flower is quite attractive with a bright yellow eye. Looks very like Paprika, except it has 3-4 rows of petals instead of just one. Pedigree purportedly contains some hulthemia. Growh habit and foliage like Sunrise-Sunset and that kind of complex hybrid.
It is in full bloom, as soon as Carefree Beauty, far ahead of New Dawn. Seems to hold dead petals a bit too well and too long.
Any clues to ploidy?
I think the majority of that series are triploid, with some being tetraploid. I am trying out Honey Bun. I’ll use is as pollen first, possibly on (Solitaire x Baby Love).
I am pretesting a number of roses for David for possible inclusion in the northern Earthkind trials. Strawberry Crush (I have two) has survived two winters here (Zone 3), although it does die back to the crown. The plants demonstrated inconsistent disease results last year. One plant displayed extremely good disease resistance all summer while the other defoliated completely–for that reason I said that I could not recommend inclusion in the formal trials. I will say that I was disappointed as I truly liked this rose–they were lovely for much of the summer. Breakdown did not occur until late in the summer–and we did have over 12 inches of rain in August with 10 inches coming in one week.
Yeah, both of its parents (Anna Ford, Euphorbia) are so-so regarding disease resistance. The other Oso Easy series seem to have healthier parents.
Julie , 12 iches of rain in a month, where I am in OZ thats our yearly rainfall, send some this way.
Twelve inches of rain in one month created many problems around here but living with 12 inches/year sounds much worse!
13.5 inches rain in central ohio in past two months.
Dave what type of rainfall do you get in Ohio for a year. A place in the country I was raised up in before comming back to Australia use to get 14ft of rain a year, thats 14 ft (164").
We had 6 hours of 80 degree weather today. It was so random and odd. This weather is confusing =/ However, I did learn that Mary Susan, one of the new Buck roses, it VERY speckled. It popped open today. Its semi-double, has a coral red reverse, and it has a moderate orange face with that Pernet-rustic-orange color of speckles. Its pretty, but the plant is very upright. Its almost a floribunda. I hope it doesnt blackspot.
