stigma fluid modification

I was reading a recent pollination research paper (not on roses), and they mentioned something that I had seen in writing before but had forgotten about.

For a wide cross has anyone tried rubbing the stigma of the mother with the stigma of a rose known to be compatible with the pollen of the father (right before applying the pollen)?

In this paper they used the technique for a different reason. They wanted to place the pollen immediately on an immature stigma rather than wait until the stigma was ready.
