Starting cuttings with Potatoes?

I was tooling around my Facebook News Feed the other night and came across a suggestion to root cuttings by sticking the bottoms in potatoes, to keep the root area constantly moist. Has anyone tried this? Seems like a good idea as there would be little chance of disturbing new roots.

It’s really funny how this has made the rounds. It is documented that cuttings traveled across country with settlers in potatoes. American modern potatoes are chemically treated to retard sprouting and I understand that treatment inhibits the rooting of cuttings inserted into them. Grow your own so there is no inhibitor or buy organic potatoes and it may work. But, as Jeri Jennings stated, “if I’m going to the trouble of growing my own potatoes, I’m going to EAT them!”

Well, maybe now I have a use for all the potatoes that sprout in my kitchen cabinets!
