Some Bugnet's roses parentage

Bonjour et Bonne Année 2012 à tous!

Firstly excuse me for my poor English…

It is the first time I write in this forum, but I have thought that it will be important to share with you some results concerning the parentage of some M.Bugnet ‘s roses that I have found when I have made a research in the « Georges Bugnet Fonds University St-Jean Edmonton Alberta » sent to me by Mme Margit Schowalter. And after the excellent article « The Mysterious parentage of Thérèse Bugnet » by M. Peter Harris (and me) in the journal Rose Hybridizers Association (VolXLII, No1 Spring 2011), I have decided to write a résumé of my research in the journal Roses-Canada (No 57 November 2011) for National-Roses-Canada. The article is headed « Fonds Georges Bugnet une recherche fructueuse » and here is the thing I would like to share with you : the parentage of M.Bugnet’s roses I have discovered in his personal notes .

Thérèse Bugnet = Pelouses x Université (Note : Pelouses is R.rugosa fl. pl. x (R.amblyotis x R.blanda) and Université is a mixed pollen of Hansa, R.hugonis and Betty Bland

Betty Bugnet = Pleine du bout x Thérèse Bugnet (Note : Pleine du bout is a sibbling of Thérèse Bugnet, same cross)

Anne Bugnet = Élastic x Pimpinell. (Note : Élastic is R.amblyotis x (R.kamtchatica x R.blanda) )

Marie Bugnet = Betty Bugnet x F.J. Grootendorst

Marthe Beauchamp = Betty Bugnet x F.J. Grootendorst

Martha Bugnet = (Grimpant x F.J. Grootendorst) No1 (Note : Grimpant is Élastic x Tortillou, and Tortillou is, according to M.Bugnet, a sport of F.J. Grootendorst)

Madeleine Bugnet = (Grimpant x F.J. Gootendorst) No5 x pollens of Marthe Beauchamp and Marie Bugnet

Lac Majeau = Martha Bugnet x Betty Bugnet

Louise Bugnet = Martha Bugnet x Thérèse Bugnet

Voilà , I hope these informations can help some lovers of these wonderful roses!

Andre, thank you for this! Very interesting! May I please have your permission to post your information to the appropriate rose pages on Help Me Find-Roses? Of course, all of it will be attributed to you as it is your research. I appreciate it.

Andre, what is the rose Pimpinelle, pollen parent of Anne Bugnet, please? I don’t find it on Help Me Find-Roses.

According to your research, Marthe Beauchamp and Martha Bugnet are distinct varieties. They’ve been linked as synonymous on Help Me Find. Martha Bugnet on Help Me Find

The “authority” for separating them in the References section there should then be listed as Georges Bugnet’s personal notes as reported in your article?

Thank you!

Bonjour Kim

I have already sent a copy of this message to Help Me Find, but I don’t know if they have received it. You can distribute this information as you wish, thank you for your help!

Concerning Anne Bugnet, the only reference of this cross is in the “Notes botaniques”,1955, IMG 2349, p.56 : M Bugnet writes: Élastic x Pimpinell. - “Le meilleur premier à l’ouest, baptisé, en 1960, Anne Bugnet”. “Pimpinell.” is probably a Pimpinellifoliae rose or a Bugnet’s rose nicknamed as Élastic, Pelouse and others…?

In 1955 M Bugnet has obtained 5 plants of his cross (Grimpant x Grootendorst) (same reference as Anne Bugnet) and in 1957 the seedling No1 became Martha Bugnet ; " Notes botaniques, 1957, IMG 2366, p.72 " : M.Bugnet writes : " 30 Août grim – groot No1 devenu Martha Bugnet ". There are many annotations of Martha Bugnet in parenthesis above this seedling gr.gr.No1 in M Bugnet’s notes. Therefore, it is really a distinct rose and not a synonym of Marthe Bugnet or Marthe Beauchamp.

These two latters are the same rose but the name we must retain is Marthe Beauchamp because M Bugnet has added a note concerning this rose (probably some years later) in his personal notes ; Journal 26 Août 1955, IMG 2215, p.6 : " Vendredi – Deux des 3 Betty Bugnet x F.J. Grootendorst sont en fleurs. Celle qui est le plus à l’est est blanche assez double, bien faite et parfumée. Si elle fait bien l’an prochain je la nommerai Marie Bugnet. – Sa voisine à l’ouest a une fleur rouge, plus grosse, plus double, parfumée. Ce sera Marthe Bugnet si l’an prochain prouve sa valeur. ( Devenue Marthe Beauchamp) ". This note in parenthesis has been added probably when Marthe has met her husband, Edouard Beauchamp.

Voila Kim, thank you for your interest !

Hello Andre,

Thank you! I appreciate your sending the information to Help Me Find. As it will probably be Lyn who works on it, I will coordinate with her and reference what you’ve included here to help sort it all out. Should we have questions, I’ll be sure to contact you. Thank you!

I thought some of you would like to see the sort of notes Andre was working with. My photographs of Notes Botaniques were taken in a hurry in very poor lighting. The notebook measured approximately 8" long and 7" wide. Georges script is incredibly tiny and the colour has faded. It had to have taken many days to work through it. We owe Andre a very large debt.

Thank you Andre.

Margit
