Soft vs. hard hips?

Hi, all,

Alas all I had to be away much of the old rose hybridizing season last year on a family emergency, and none of my hybridized hips came through for me. I am having good success, though, with open pollinated hips, and with that encouragement in mind I went out this morning to collect some more.

I noticed that some hips are now “soft”, squishy and bright red; the seeds can be easily squeezed out of them and the smell of the R. arkansana and R. woodsii ultramontana are just … wow! Other hips are bone dry. The seeds from both kinds appear to be just as good, so I wondered:

Have any of you ever noted any difference in sprouting between “soft” hip and “hard” hip seeds? I’m planting them all anyway, but just wondered.
